Railway applications - Wheelsets and bogies - Wheels - Wheel treads
This European Standard defines the tread profiles of wheels with a diameter greater than or equal to 330 mm used on vehicles running on European standard gauge track to fulfil interoperability requirements. These profiles apply to new wheels, whether free-standing or assembled as wheelsets, as well as to wheels that require reprofiling during maintenance.
Any profile that does not conform to this standard shall only be used following agreement between the train operator and the infrastructure manager.

Overview
EN 13715:2006/FprA1 - Railway applications - Wheelsets and bogies - Wheels - Wheel treads - is a CEN European Standard that defines the tread profiles for wheels with a diameter ≥ 330 mm used on vehicles running on European standard gauge track. The standard covers both new wheels (free-standing or assembled as wheelsets) and wheels that require reprofiling during maintenance to meet interoperability and safe vehicle–track interaction requirements. Any wheel profile not conforming to EN 13715:2006/FprA1 can only be used after agreement between the train operator and the infrastructure manager.
Key topics and requirements
- Wheel tread profiles: Normative definitions of tread and flange geometry intended to ensure compatibility with European track gauging and dynamic behaviour.
- Scope: Applies to wheels ≥ 330 mm diameter for standard gauge rolling stock; includes new wheels and wheels undergoing reprofiling.
- Interoperability: Supports essential requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC and is cross-referenced to relevant TSIs (High Speed RST, Freight Wagons, Locomotives & Passenger RST) via Annex ZA.
- Vehicle–track interaction: Addresses wheel/rail interface considerations such as equivalent conicity and design values that affect running safety and dynamic behaviour (referenced in the standard and associated TSIs).
- In-service limits: Includes provisions for in-service geometric limits of wheels and wheelsets (see Annex M).
- Constituents and specifications: Defines interoperability constituents, their performance requirements and how wheel profiles interact with gauging and bogie geometry.
- Amendment details: The FprA1 draft updates the foreword and Annex ZA (relationship to Directive 2008/57/EC) and removes Annex ZB in the proposed amendment.
Applications
- Ensures consistent wheel geometry for safe vehicle–rail interaction across Europe.
- Guides reprofiling and workshop maintenance to meet interoperability limits.
- Used in design and procurement of new wheels and wheelsets to comply with track gauging and TSI requirements.
- Helps harmonize wheel profile selection to reduce derailment risk, wear and dynamic instabilities.
Who uses this standard
- Rolling stock manufacturers and designers
- Maintenance and reprofiling workshops
- Train operators and fleet managers
- Infrastructure managers and track engineers
- Certification bodies and national standards organizations
