Overview
EN 2591-402:2012 - “Aerospace series - Elements of electrical and optical connection - Test methods - Part 402: Shock” specifies a test method to assess the ability of electrical and optical connection elements (connectors, contacts, shielding assemblies) to withstand mechanical shock of defined severity. The standard is intended for use together with EN 2591-100 (general test requirements) and is based on the environmental shock principles of EN 60068-2-27. It defines pulse shapes, severity levels, specimen preparation, test apparatus capabilities and pass/fail criteria for contact continuity.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Method for evaluating connector resistance to mechanical shock; used with EN 2591-100.
- Pulse shapes: Two methods are supported
- Method A: half‑sine wave pulse
- Method B: final peak saw‑tooth pulse
(These follow the pulse definitions in EN 60068-2-27.)
- Severity levels: Typical peak accelerations include 30 g, 50 g, 100 g and 300 g with specified durations and associated velocity changes. The true velocity change must be within ±10% of the nominal value.
- Apparatus: Shock machines and mounting fixtures must meet the specified pulse shape and performance when loaded with the specimen.
- Specimen preparation: Mounting method, cable types, wiring, pulse shape selection, test severity, axes, shock counts and initial/final measurements must be specified in the technical specification.
- Test procedure: Specimens receive a number of successive shocks along prescribed axes and directions. Measurements for contact discontinuity are normally performed to EN 2591-204 (Method B).
- Acceptance criterion: No contact discontinuity greater than 1 µs shall be observed (unless otherwise stated in the technical specification). Final visual and mating/unmating force checks are performed per EN 2591-101 and EN 2591-408 where applicable.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Aerospace manufacturers, connector and cable assembly suppliers, test laboratories, quality and reliability engineers, procurement and certification bodies in the aerospace and defense sectors.
- Practical applications:
- Qualification of electrical and optical connectors for aircraft, spacecraft and airborne systems.
- Verification of connector robustness after design changes or supplier changes.
- Acceptance testing during production or after repair/overhaul.
- Supporting procurement specifications and conformance evidence for safety‑critical electrical interconnections.
- Benefits: Provides repeatable, harmonized shock‑test criteria to ensure connector integrity under mechanical shock environments common in aerospace operations.
