Overview
EN 13170:2012+A1:2015/FprA2 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for factory made thermal insulation products of expanded cork (ICB) used in buildings. This standard is intended to ensure the quality, performance, and safety of expanded cork insulation materials throughout their life cycle, from manufacturing to final application in construction. EN 13170 ensures compliance with the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR), supporting harmonization of product performance, marking, and testing protocols across Europe.
Expanded cork insulation offers a range of benefits including thermal efficiency, sustainable material sourcing, and acoustic performance, making it a preferred solution for environmentally conscious building projects.
Key Topics
- Product Characteristics: EN 13170 defines the essential properties of expanded cork insulation boards, including apparent density, compressive strength, tensile strength perpendicular to faces, thermal resistance and conductivity, dimensional stability, water absorption, and propensity for smouldering.
- Performance Assessment: The standard specifies testing methods for each property, using harmonized European procedures such as EN 1602 for density and EN 16733 for continuous smouldering.
- Release of Dangerous Substances: Procedures are outlined to assess emissions into indoor air in accordance with EN 16516, supporting healthy indoor environments in buildings.
- Marking and Labelling: Requirements for product designation include code indications for key properties such as compressive strength, water absorption, and smouldering (NoS, S, or ANP).
- Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP): EN 13170 details the systems and tasks for type testing and factory production control to maintain consistent quality across manufacturing batches.
- Compliance with EU Regulations: The Annex ZA links the standard to the requirements of Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011 (CPR), establishing the basis for CE marking and the Declaration of Performance (DoP).
Applications
EN 13170 applies to expanded cork insulation boards used for:
- Thermal Insulation: Walls, floors, roofs, and ceilings in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to improve energy efficiency and internal comfort.
- Sound Insulation: Improving acoustic performance in building envelopes due to cork’s natural sound-absorbing properties.
- Eco-friendly Construction: Supporting green building certifications (such as LEED or BREEAM) by utilizing a renewable, low-emission material.
- Moisture and Fire Protection: Providing resistance to moisture ingress and low propensity to smouldering, enhancing overall building safety and durability.
The standard is relevant for manufacturers, builders, architects, and specifiers involved in selecting and installing insulation materials that comply with European harmonized requirements.
Related Standards
To ensure full compliance and interoperability, EN 13170 refers to several related European and international standards:
- EN 1602: Determination of apparent density of insulation products.
- EN 16733: Assessment of continuous smouldering in building products.
- EN 16516: Determination of emissions of dangerous substances into indoor air.
- EN 13172: Factory production control guidelines for thermal insulation products.
- EN 822/EN 823/EN 824: Measurement of length, width, thickness, and squareness of insulation boards.
- EN 13501-1: Classification of reaction to fire performance.
- EN 16069: Specification for polyethylene foam insulation.
By complying with EN 13170 and its referenced documents, stakeholders can ensure that expanded cork insulation products contribute to sustainable, safe, and high-performance building envelopes, while meeting stringent European regulatory and market demands.
