Overview

EN 13763-23:2025 - published by CEN - specifies a standardized method for the verification of the shock wave velocity of shock tubes used with detonators for civil uses. The procedure applies to shock tubes intended for non-electric detonators, surface connectors and electronic detonators, and to shock tube as a bulk product. It does not apply to electric detonators, plain or semi‑finished detonators, detonating cord relays or electronic initiation systems. This part of the EN 13763 series updates and replaces EN 13763-23:2002 and aligns test practice with EN 13763-1:2025 requirements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability: clear inclusion/exclusion of products (non-electric and electronic detonator shock tubes covered; electric detonators and certain relay systems excluded).
  • Principle: measure the time for a shock wave to travel a defined distance and calculate velocity to verify conformity with the specified value.
  • Sample size and conditioning:
    • Select 20 test pieces (each 2.4 m to 6 m long).
    • Store in a conditioning chamber at (20 ± 2) °C for ≥ 1 hour before testing.
  • Apparatus:
    • Means of initiation as per EN 13763-1:2025.
    • Shock wave velocity measuring equipment with two identical photodiodes connected to optical fibres; timing uncertainty ≤ ±1 μs; start/stop triggered on the same rising edge/trigger level.
    • Conditioning chamber, adhesive tape for end-sealing, and a length measuring device (up to 6 m, readable to 1 mm).
  • Test arrangement and distances:
    • Mark measuring point A ≥ 1 000 mm from one end; mark B ≥ 1 000 mm further along, with at least 400 mm remaining to the far end.
    • Maintain optical fibre contact to avoid false triggers.
  • Pass/fail criteria:
    • Each test piece must initiate and propagate the shock wave across its full length.
    • Measured shock wave velocity for each piece must be within ±10% of the value specified in EN 13763-1:2025, 4.9.1.5. Any initiation failure, incomplete propagation, or out‑of‑range velocity results in test termination and a “fail”.
  • Reporting: test report must reference EN 13763-23:2025 and include identification of explosive, measuring equipment description, individual distances, times, calculated velocities, and the final pass/fail outcome (with observations if failed).

Applications and users

  • Quality control laboratories and manufacturers of shock tubes and detonators for civil blasting.
  • Mine, quarry and construction industry safety and compliance teams verifying initiation reliability and timing.
  • Notified bodies and testing services demonstrating conformity with Directive 2014/28/EU essential safety requirements through standardized test methods.
