Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 601: Smoke density
This test method is intended for determination of the specific optical density of smoke generated by electrical wire/cable insulation materials due to pyrolitic decomposition under the influence of radiant heat only or with simultaneous flame application.
It is used for evaluation of insulation materials of electrical wire/cable used in the interiors of aerospace vehicles but may be utilized in other applications as specified in applicable procurement documents.
This standard should be used to measure and describe the properties of products in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions and should not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. However results of this test may be used as elements of a fire risk assessment which takes into account all of the factors which are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use.

Overview
EN 3475-601:2007 - Aerospace series: Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 601: Smoke density is a CEN standard that specifies a laboratory method to measure the specific optical density (Ds) of smoke produced by electrical wire and cable insulation when subjected to radiant heat, with or without simultaneous flame application. The method quantifies smoke via reduction in light transmission in a controlled test chamber and is intended for evaluation of cable insulation used in aircraft interiors. Results support material selection and elements of fire risk assessment but are not a direct measure of real-world fire hazard.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & purpose: Measurement of smoke density from pyrolitic decomposition of insulation materials under radiant heat (non-flaming) and flaming modes.
- Specific optical density (Ds): Dimensionless metric derived from measured light obscuration and a geometric factor; includes parameters Dm (maximum Ds) and tDm (time to Dm).
- Test chamber: Square-cornered enclosure with defined internal dimensions, sealed door and vents, pressure monitoring (manometer/pressure transducer), and pressure-equalization provisions.
- Radiant heat furnace: Provides a controlled heat flux of (25 ± 0.5) kW/m2; includes oven construction, coil heating element and flux gauge for calibration.
- Pilot burner: Six-tube straight-tip pilot burner with defined air/propane mix (air ~500 cm3/min, propane ~50 cm3/min at reference conditions) to establish flaming mode.
- Specimen holder & backing: Stainless steel frame and millboard backing to present a nominal exposed area (approx. 65 × 65 mm) and to collect drips.
- Photometric system: Vertical light path with incandescent source (brightness temperature ~2 200 ± 100 K), photomultiplier tube (S-4 response), and data recording capable of measuring transmittance to 1.0% with high accuracy.
- Procedure controls: Conditioning of specimens, apparatus checks, calibration (heat flux gauge), and reporting requirements are specified to ensure reproducibility.
- Limitations: Intended for laboratory characterization; results may be incorporated into broader fire risk assessments but do not alone represent actual fire performance.
Applications
- Material qualification and comparative testing of aerospace cable insulation for aircraft interiors.
- Supplier and procurement specifications where smoke density metrics are required.
- Component selection for cabin safety, avionics bays, and other interior systems where smoke generation is a concern.
- Input data for fire safety engineers conducting multi-factor fire risk assessments.
Who should use this standard
- Aerospace OEMs, cable and wire manufacturers, and suppliers developing and certifying cable insulation.
- Accredited test laboratories performing EN/aviation cable test methods.
- Procurement teams and safety engineers specifying material acceptance criteria for aircraft interiors.
Related standards
- Other parts of the EN 3475 series covering electrical cables and associated test methods (see EN 3475 series for complementary mechanical, flammability and electrical tests).
