Overview

EN 15743:2010/FprA1 - published by CEN - specifies the composition, specifications and conformity criteria for supersulfated cement. The 2014 amendment adapts the standard to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR, Regulation (EU) No 305/2011), adds provisions on dangerous substances, updates references (EN 197-2:2014) and aligns Annex ZA with CPR requirements. The standard relies on test methods in EN 196 (parts 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Composition and subfamilies: Defines supersulfated cement constituents and permitted compositional variants (subfamilies) and how composition determines product type.
  • Performance characteristics: Specifies essential characteristics to be declared or recorded where required, including:
    • Compressive strength (early and standard classes)
    • Setting time
    • Insoluble residue
    • Loss on ignition
    • Soundness
    • SO3 content
    • Chloride content (note: supersulfated cement may contain > 0.10 % chloride - see standard)
    • Heat of hydration
    • Durability / sulfate resistance as it relates to concrete, mortar and grout prepared from the cement
  • Conformity and testing:
    • Use of EN 196 reference test methods; alternative methods allowed only if validated and in disputes the reference methods prevail.
    • Factory Production Control (FPC) and product-type determination requirements follow EN 197-2:2014.
  • Dangerous substances: New clause advising verification/declaration of release/content according to national regulations in the absence of harmonized European methods.
  • CE marking and Declaration of Performance (DoP): Annex ZA provides guidance on AVCP system (System 1+ for supersulfated cement), DoP content and example DoP entries.

Practical applications

  • Intended use: preparation of concrete, mortar, grout and similar hydraulic mixes.
  • Ensures manufacturers and specifiers can demonstrate that supersulfated cement meets harmonized composition and performance criteria for structural and non-structural applications, and comply with CPR requirements when placing product on EU markets.
  • Useful where control of chloride, sulfate behaviour, heat of hydration and soundness are important for durability-sensitive mixes.

Who should use this standard

  • Cement manufacturers producing supersulfated cement
  • Quality managers implementing FPC and DoP procedures
  • Testing laboratories and notified bodies performing AVCP and certification
  • Specifiers, engineers and contractors selecting cement for mixes with durability or chemical exposure concerns
  • Regulatory authorities monitoring compliance with CPR

Related standards

  • EN 197-2:2014 (evaluation of conformity of common cements)
  • EN 196 series (methods of testing cement)
  • CPR - Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 (CE marking and DoP requirements)

Foreword
This document (EN 15743:2010/FprA1:2014) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 51
“Cement and building limes”, the secretariat of which is held by NBN.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Regulation(s).
For relationship with EU Regulation(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.
This European Standard sets out requirements for the composition and specifications of supersulfated
cement. The scheme for the evaluation of conformity of supersulfated cement is that specified in EN 197-2.
Compared to the version EN 15743:2010 the following major changes have been included in this document:
 Clause “Dangerous substances”;
 Use of the terminology given by the Construction Products Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 305/2011) in
9.1;
 Adaption of Annex ZA to the new CEN template.
The requirements in this European Standard are based on the results of tests on cement in accordance with
parts 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 of EN 196, Methods of testing cement.
Note: Due to fact that the Framework Partnership Agreement between the Commission and CEN & CENELEC
is not signed yet, there are currently no New Approach Consultants in place for 2014. Therefore the provisions
of CEN-CENELEC Guide 15 cannot be met.
This shall not prevent the processing of draft standards nor the offering of harmonized standards to the
Commission. In particular, draft standards can be sent to vote without Consultant assessment.
This note will be removed from the Foreword of the finalized publication.

1 Modification to Clause 2
Replace "EN 197-2:2000" with EN 197-2:2014".
2 Modification to Clause 7
Add the following new sub-clause 7.5:
"7.5 Dangerous substances
National regulations on dangerous substances may require verification and declaration on release, and
sometimes content, when construction products covered by this standard are placed on those markets.
In the absence of European harmonized test methods, verification and declaration on release/content should
be done taking into account national provisions in the place of use.
NOTE An informative database covering European and national provisions on dangerous substances is available at
the Construction web site on EUROPA accessed through: http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/construction/cpd-ds/"
3 Modification to 9.1
nd
Replace the 2 paragraph and the note with the following:
"Alternative test methods could be used provided that they have been validated in accordance with the
appropriate provisions in the cited standards of the reference test methods. In the event of a dispute, only the
reference methods are used.
NOTE 1 This standard does not deal with acceptance inspection at delivery.
NOTE 2 For certification of constancy of performance by a notified body, conformity of cement with this standard is
evaluated in accordance with EN 197-2.
The compliance of the supersulfated cements with the requirements of this European Standard and with the
stated values (including classes) shall be demonstrated by:
 determination of the product type,
 factory production control by the manufacturer, including product assessment."
4 Modification to Annex ZA
Replace the entire Annex ZA with the following text:
"
