Overview
EN ISO 10123:2019 (adoption of ISO 10123:2013) specifies a laboratory test method to determine the static shear strength of anaerobic-curing liquid adhesives using standardized pin-and-collar specimens. Published by CEN, this standard is intended primarily for ranking and quality control of adhesives used to retain cylindrical assemblies (pin-and-collar) or to lock and seal threaded fasteners. It is important to note the test result is for comparative purposes and is not necessarily a direct indicator of in-service performance or for numerical structural design.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Measure the maximum load (F) to shear the adhesive joint and calculate shear strength τ = F / S (S = bond area).
- Specimen geometry and finish:
- Nominal pin diameter and collar internal diameter: 20 mm (nominal).
- Collar width: 18.00 ± 0.05 mm; effective bonded length used in calculations is 16 mm (accounting for chamfers).
- Surface finish: 0.8–1.6 µm.
- Apparatus:
- Universal testing machine compliant with ISO 7500-1 (class 1).
- Hardened steel specimen support and non‑adhering sheet (e.g., polyethylene).
- Specimen preparation:
- Degreasing and controlled storage (23 ± 2 °C); use within 4 days after cleaning to avoid oxidation.
- Apply adhesive uniformly to pin and collar; assemble with helicoidal motion within 6 s; cure per manufacturer instructions.
- Test procedure:
- Conditioning as required, place assembly in support, load at 1–2 mm/min crosshead speed.
- Test at least five specimens; record maximum load in newtons and compute shear strength in MPa.
- Reporting: Must include adhesive identification, substrate materials and surface prep, application conditions, conditioning, number of specimens, crosshead speed, average loads and standard deviations.
- Limitations: Precision statistic is unavailable (no interlaboratory data provided); not intended for numerical design data.
Applications
- Quality control and batch ranking of anaerobic adhesives used in retaining rings, bushings, pin-and-collar assemblies, and threadlocking/ sealing applications.
- R&D and product development for comparing formulations and curing conditions.
- Laboratory testing to support claims about shear strength under standardized conditions.
Who should use this standard
- Adhesive manufacturers and formulators
- Materials and mechanical test laboratories
- Quality assurance/quality control teams in manufacturing
- Product development engineers evaluating adhesive performance

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.is
