This European Standard specifies the test method for the estimation by reflected light of the visible contraries in paper. Visual inspection is applicable to most kinds of paper and board. Paper and board with an apparently high content of contraries require to be inspected by instrumental means as described in Annex B, as the tedium of large counts diminishes the judges' precision. However, papers which are not flat, have a low lightness (value below 30 %) and contain holes that may cause particular problems for instrumental techniques (see Annex B).

La présente norme internationale spécifie la méthode d'essai d'estimation sous lumière réfléchie des défauts visibles dans le papier. L'examen visuel est applicable à la plupart des sortes de papiers et cartons.Les papiers et cartons avec un taux de défauts apparemment élevé nécessitent d'être examinés au moyen de dispositifs automatiques comme décrit dans l'annexe B, car l'ennui provoqué par de grands dénombrements diminue la précision du jugement des observateurs.Cependant, les papiers qui ne sont pas plats, qui ont un faible facteur de réflectance lumineuse (valeur y inférieure à 30 %) et qui contiennent des trous peuvent causer des problèmes particuliers avec les dispositifs automatiques (voir annexe B). Les points fluorescents ne seront pas détectés par la méthode décrite dans la présente norme internationale.
