Overview
EN ISO 8394-1:2010 (also published as ISO 8394-1:2010) defines a standardized laboratory method to determine the extrudability of sealants used in building construction jointing products. It specifies test conditions, apparatus and reporting requirements to measure how much sealant can be extruded from its package under defined conditions. This part is intended for testing extrudability only and is not a classification method.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Method for determining extrudability (mass or volume per minute) of sealants; not for classification.
- Reference documents: Uses terms from ISO 6927 (sealant vocabulary).
- Conditioning: Test packages must be conditioned in a regulated enclosure for a minimum of 12 h. Reference temperatures: (5 ± 2) °C, (23 ± 2) °C, (35 ± 2) °C (default 23 °C).
- Apparatus:
- Regulated enclosure capable of the reference temperatures.
- Nozzle: metallic (two example geometries shown in the standard) or plastic with internal diameter between 3 mm and 6 mm (default 6 mm, tolerance ±5%).
- Pneumatically operated extrusion gun with compressed air up to 700 kPa (default test pressure 300 ± 10 kPa).
- Stopwatch (0.1 s) and balance (0.1 g).
- Test procedure:
- Use one package per test; perform three tests per sealant under identical conditions (batch, temperature, nozzle, pressure).
- Extrude for a default time of 30 s (remove air first). Record mass of extruded sealant.
- Expression of results:
- Extrusion rate (mass) = m × 60 / t (g/min). Report each value and the mean (nearest g/min).
- Optionally convert to volume using density (ml/min).
- Test report must include: reference to ISO 8394-1:2010, lab/date, sealant name/type/colour, batch number, conditioning temperature, pressure, time, nozzle details, individual and mean extrusion rates, density (if volume reported), and note any deviations.
Applications and Users
- Sealant manufacturers: R&D, formulation evaluation and production quality control.
- Third‑party test laboratories: Provide reproducible extrudability data for specifications and compliance.
- Specifiers and procurement teams: Compare ease-of-application between products for contract specs.
- Contractors and applicators: Assess suitability of sealants for pneumatic extrusion and onsite application methods.
Keywords: extrudability, sealants, EN ISO 8394-1:2010, extrusion rate, pneumatic gun, nozzle diameter, sealant testing, building construction.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
