Standard Test Method for Methanol Content of Formaldehyde Solutions

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 This test method provides a measurement of methanol content of formaldehyde solutions. The results of these measurements can be used for specification acceptance.
3.2 This test method is applicable to 37 % formaldehyde solutions containing 0 to 2 %, 6 to 8 %, or 12 to 15 % methanol.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method provides for the calculation of the methanol content of commercially available 37 % formaldehyde solutions and is based on the relationship of specific gravity to formaldehyde and methanol content.2 Separate equations are given for three ranges of methanol: 0 to 2 %, 6 to 8 %, and 12 to 15 %.
1.2 For purposes of determining conformance of an observed or a calculated value using this test method to relevant specifications, test result(s) shall be rounded off “to the nearest unit” in the last right-hand digit used in expressing the specification limit, in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.4 For hazard information and guidance, see the supplier's Material Safety Data Sheet.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific hazard statements are given in Section 4.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM D2380-04(2019), "Standard Test Method for Methanol Content of Formaldehyde Solutions," defines a reliable method for measuring the methanol content in commercially available 37% formaldehyde solutions. Developed by ASTM International, this standard utilizes specific gravity and formaldehyde content to calculate methanol concentration in various methanol ranges. The measurements obtained following this method are essential for specification acceptance, quality control, and regulatory compliance in the chemical industry.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Applicability

    • Applicable to 37% formaldehyde solutions with methanol content of 0 to 2%, 6 to 8%, or 12 to 15%.
    • Method based on the relationship between specific gravity at 25/25 °C and formaldehyde/methanol levels.
  • Test Methodology

    • Involves determining the specific gravity and formaldehyde content using referenced ASTM procedures.
    • Separate calculation equations provided for each methanol concentration range for precise determination.
  • Units and Reporting

    • All results are to be reported using SI units.
    • Methanol content is to be rounded to the nearest 0.1% in accordance with ASTM's Practice E29 on significant digits.
  • Precision and Acceptance Criteria

    • Within-laboratory standard deviation: 0.10% (28 degrees of freedom).
    • Between-laboratory standard deviation: 0.16% (12 degrees of freedom).
    • Repeatability: Results differ by more than 0.3% between runs should be considered suspect.
    • Reproducibility: Results differing by more than 0.5% between laboratories should be considered suspect.
  • Safety and Regulatory Compliance

    • Users must consult Material Safety Data Sheets for hazard information regarding formaldehyde and methanol.
    • The standard emphasizes the importance of appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices.

Applications

  • Specification Acceptance: Ensures the methanol content of formaldehyde solutions meets commercial and regulatory standards, supporting quality control in chemical manufacturing.
  • Quality Control: Used by laboratories and manufacturers to verify the composition of formaldehyde solutions used in resin production, adhesives, and coatings.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Provides a consistent framework for reporting and verifying methanol content in accordance with international trade and safety regulations.
  • Interlaboratory Consistency: Facilitates repeatable and reproducible results across industry laboratories for specification and contract purposes.

Related Standards
