SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method provides a measurement of acidity (as formic acid) in formaldehyde solutions. The results of these measurements can be used for specification acceptance.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the acidity of commercially available formaldehyde solutions.
1.2 For purposes of determining conformance of an observed or a calculated value using this test method to relevant specifications, test result(s) shall be rounded off “to the nearest unit” in the last right-hand digit used in expressing the specification limit, in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.4 For hazard information and guidance, see the supplier’s Safety Data Sheet.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific hazard statements are given in Section 7.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM D2379-09(2023) - Standard Test Method for Acidity of Formaldehyde Solutions outlines a precise procedure for determining the acidity, measured as formic acid content, of commercially available formaldehyde solutions. This method establishes a uniform approach for testing laboratories and manufacturers to assess whether formaldehyde products comply with quality specifications. The standard is developed and maintained by ASTM International and aligns with globally recognized principles for standardization.

Key Topics

  • Measurement of Acidity: The test method involves titration of a formaldehyde solution sample with a standard sodium hydroxide solution using a bromthymol blue indicator. This precisely quantifies formic acid content, which is an important quality indicator.
  • Specification Compliance: Test results obtained using this method are critical for determining conformance to product specifications for formaldehyde solutions. Results must be rounded according to Practice ASTM E29.
  • Use of SI Units: All measurements and data reported under this standard use International System of Units (SI), ensuring consistency and global applicability.
  • Safety and Hazard Awareness: The standard emphasizes the importance of adhering to proper safety practices and refers users to relevant Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for handling formaldehyde and sodium hydroxide.
  • Precision and Reporting: Procedures for calculating and reporting test results are specified, with clear guidance on acceptable repeatability and reproducibility for laboratory and inter-laboratory consistency.

Applications

ASTM D2379 provides practical value in a variety of industrial and laboratory settings where formaldehyde solutions are produced, processed, or applied:

  • Quality Control: Chemical manufacturers and suppliers use the standard to verify that batches of formaldehyde solution meet specific acidity requirements before distribution.
  • Product Acceptance: Purchasers and regulatory bodies rely on this method as part of specification acceptance protocols for raw materials and chemical intermediates.
  • Research and Development: Laboratories engaged in developing new materials or applications that use formaldehyde solutions utilize the standard for accurate acidity assessment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensures that formaldehyde products conform to regional or international regulatory standards, helping minimize the risk of product rejection or recalls.

Related Standards

For comprehensive analysis and best practices, ASTM D2379 references several other ASTM standards and industry guidelines:

  • ASTM E29: Practice for Using Significant Digits in Test Data to Determine Conformance with Specifications
  • ASTM D1193: Specification for Reagent Water
  • ASTM D2380: Test Method for Methanol Content of Formaldehyde Solutions
  • ASTM E200: Practice for Preparation, Standardization, and Storage of Standard and Reagent Solutions for Chemical Analysis

Additional references, such as guidelines from the American Chemical Society and other reagent specifications, may also apply for laboratory operations.

Following ASTM D2379 ensures the reliable measurement of acidity in formaldehyde solutions, supporting stringent quality assurance, safety, and regulatory standards across chemical manufacturing and laboratory environments. The method's focus on accuracy, reproducibility, and international best practices makes it essential for stakeholders throughout the chemical supply chain.
