Overview
ASTM D4288-02(2019): Standard Specification for Calcium Borosilicate Pigments establishes internationally recognized requirements for three grades of calcium borosilicate composite pigments. This specification, overseen by ASTM Committee D01, covers two primary types of calcium borosilicate pigment distinguished by their chemical composition, and two classes within Type I characterized by oil absorption properties. The standard ensures uniformity and quality across calcium borosilicate pigment products, supporting both manufacturers and buyers in the paint, coatings, and plastics industries.
Key Topics
- Grades and Types:
- Three commercial grades, with two types differing in chemical composition (e.g., proportion of calcium oxide, boron oxide, and silica).
- Classes within Type I distinguished by oil absorption characteristics.
- Physical and Chemical Properties:
- The dry pigment must be white and match agreed reference samples in shade and tinting strength.
- Major particle sizes within 1 to 10 µm, with coarse particles (<0.3%) retained on a 45 µm sieve.
- Maximum specific surface diameter set at 2.5 µm.
- Composition Requirements:
- Calcium oxide (CaO): 41-46% for Type I; 41.5-45.5% for Type II.
- Boron oxide (B₂O₃): 9-11% for Type I; 15-17.5% for Type II.
- Silica (SiO₂): 38-42% for Type I; 32-36% for Type II.
- Test Methods:
- Standardized ASTM test methods for particle size, oil absorption, ignition loss, and chemical analysis.
- Sampling procedures ensure consistency across production batches.
- Quality and International Compliance:
- Developed according to internationally recognized standardization principles, supporting global trade and regulatory compliance.
Applications
- Industrial Coatings and Paints:
- Calcium borosilicate pigments provide desirable properties such as whiteness, color stability, and chemical resistance for industrial and architectural applications.
- Plastics and Polymers:
- Used as high-performance white pigments or extender pigments in polymers, improving physical and mechanical properties.
- Cosmetics and Specialty Coatings:
- Due to regulated particle size and non-toxic composition, they are suitable for specialty coatings and cosmetic formulations.
- Quality Control and Product Development:
- Provides a benchmark for manufacturers to evaluate material consistency and compliance.
- Enables purchasers to specify exacting pigment properties based on application requirements.
Related Standards
- ASTM D185: Test methods for determining coarse particles in pigments, relevant for coarse fraction assessment.
- ASTM D281: Determines oil absorption of pigments by spatula rub-out, essential for identifying pigment class.
- ASTM D1366: Details the practice for reporting particle size characteristics.
