Overview

ASTM D329-07(2021), Standard Specification for Acetone, provides clear and internationally recognized guidelines for the quality and testing of acetone (99.5% grade). Developed by ASTM International and aligned with global standards, this specification ensures that acetone used in industrial, laboratory, and manufacturing settings meets consistent purity and performance requirements. Acetone, also known as dimethyl ketone or 2-propanone, is a widely used volatile solvent and chemical intermediate.

Key Topics

  • Purity Requirements: Specifies minimum acetone assay of 99.5% by weight, ensuring high-grade material suited for demanding applications.
  • Testing Procedures: Outlines rigorous test methods for determining acidity, alkalinity, aldehyde content, water content, color, specific gravity, nonvolatile matter, odor, permanganate time, distillation range, and water miscibility.
  • Sampling and Conformance: Mandates proper sampling in accordance with ASTM Practice E300 and requires precise data rounding practices to ensure accurate conformance with specification limits.
  • Health, Safety, and Environmental Considerations: Highlights acetone's status as a hazardous chemical under OSHA regulations and emphasizes the user's responsibility for safe handling, environmental protection, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Packaging and Delivery: Allows for the purchaser and supplier to agree on packaging size, with required conformity to shipping regulations and federal specifications when applicable (PPP-C-2020).

Applications

The ASTM D329 acetone specification is essential for:

  • Chemical Manufacturing: Supporting precise reactions and formulations where solvent purity directly influences product quality.
  • Paints, Coatings, and Adhesives: Serving as a solvent in the production and application of paints, coatings, varnishes, and adhesives, where contaminant-free acetone is critical.
  • Pharmaceuticals and Laboratories: Providing a reliable reagent and solvent for analysis, synthesis, and cleaning processes.
  • Plastics and Polymers: Acting as a cleaning and thinning agent in plastics processing.
  • Quality Assurance: Enabling manufacturers and users to verify acetone conformance through standardized test methods, thereby reducing risk and ensuring product reliability.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assisting companies in meeting local and international safety and environmental regulations related to chemical use and transport.

By adhering to ASTM D329-07(2021), organizations benefit from a consistent and recognized benchmark for acetone quality, ensuring safe operations and high-quality outcomes.
