Overview
ASTM F2343-15(2021) defines standardized test methods for determining the accuracy of electronic devices that evaluate the composition or quality constituents of livestock, meat, and poultry. Developed by ASTM International, this standard provides a uniform framework that helps manufacturers, users, and regulatory authorities assess and verify the performance of evaluation devices by referencing clear and consistent procedures. The objective is to ensure accuracy in measurements that directly impact the value and classification of agricultural products.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Covers electronic evaluation devices used in the livestock, meat, and poultry industries.
- Addresses techniques for measuring composition and quality characteristics.
- Stipulates that SI units are the standard reference.
Reference Materials and Calibration
- Emphasizes the use of independently verified reference materials, such as test blocks and phantom carcasses, for both initial calibration and ongoing accuracy verification.
- Requires that reference materials must be uniquely identified and retained for periodic recalibration.
Test Procedures
- Describes methods for daily checks, calibration routines, and error verification for various devices, including ultrasound and visual imaging systems.
- Outlines repeatability requirements by mandating multiple readings across the device's operational range.
- Details how measurement errors are compared against tolerance limits set by NIST Handbook 44 or the ASTM standard.
Tolerance Limits
- Specifies allowable tolerances for linear and area measurements to ensure device precision.
Safety and Compliance
- Reminds users that it is their responsibility to address any safety, health, or environmental risks associated with the use of evaluation devices.
- Highlights the need for compliance with regulatory limitations.
Applications
ASTM F2343-15(2021) has significant practical value across multiple sectors:
Manufacturers:
- Standardizes device verification processes, facilitating design improvements and helping in product certification.
- Supports device reliability and builds customer trust by adhering to recognized accuracy standards.
Users and Operators:
- Provides clear instructions for daily testing and calibration, reducing maintenance errors.
- Ensures devices produce accurate, repeatable measurements for livestock, meat, and poultry assessment.
Regulatory Authorities:
- Offers a consistent benchmark for evaluating the performance of industry equipment.
- Aids in fair trade by ensuring devices meet uniform evaluation criteria.
Quality Assurance Teams:
- Enhances food safety and quality control systems by ensuring measurement device accuracy.
Animal Agriculture and Food Industry:
- Directly supports the grading, pricing, and classification of meat and poultry products by ensuring reliable measurement tools.
