Overview

The ASTM B16/B16M-19 Standard Specification for Free-Cutting Brass Rod, Bar and Shapes for Use in Screw Machines establishes comprehensive requirements for free-cutting brass rod, bar, wire, and shapes produced from Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C36000 or C36010. This standard is specifically designed for high-speed screw machining applications and moderate thread rolling, offering critical guidance for manufacturers and end-users in ensuring reliable performance and consistent material quality.

ASTM B16/B16M-19 addresses essential characteristics such as chemical composition, mechanical properties, temper, dimensional tolerance, and testing methods. Products covered by this standard are frequently utilized in industries requiring efficient, high-speed machining and precise, repeatable part manufacture.

Key Topics

  • Material and Manufacturing Requirements

    • Specifies the use of Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C36000 (commonly known as free-cutting brass) and C36010.
    • Requires the material to originate from high-purity billets, ensuring suitability for extrusion into rods, bars, wire, and complex shapes.
    • Permits production in both straight lengths and coils, depending on customer requirements.
  • Chemical Composition

    • Defines strict composition ranges for copper, lead, iron, and zinc to ensure optimal machinability and performance.
    • Requires regular analysis and traceability, supporting quality assurance throughout the supply chain.
  • Mechanical Properties

    • Details mandatory mechanical properties, including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and Rockwell hardness, according to product size and temper.
    • Includes acceptance criteria for both tensile and hardness testing, using standard ASTM test methods.
  • Tempers and Forms

    • Establishes temper designations: O60 (soft anneal), H02 (half-hard), and H04 (hard).
    • Specifies default supply in half-hard temper unless stated otherwise at order placement.
  • Dimensional Tolerances

    • Offers uniform standards for dimensions, mass, and permissible variations, promoting interchangeability and consistency.

Applications

  • High-Speed Screw Machining

    • Ideal for components manufactured on automatic screw machines where high-speed cutting and precision are essential.
    • Suitable for the production of fittings, fasteners, valve parts, and precision-engineered components in electrical, automotive, and plumbing industries.
  • Thread Rolling

    • Products conforming to ASTM B16/B16M-19 are engineered for moderate thread rolling without compromising structural integrity or machinability.
  • General Manufacturing

    • Used across diverse manufacturing sectors where repeatability, time efficiency, and material consistency are critical.
    • Free-cutting brass under this standard ensures excellent chip formation and surface finish, reducing tool wear and downtime.

6. Chemical Composition
6.1 The product shall conform to the chemical compositional requirements specified in Table 1 for Copper Alloy UNS No.
C36000 or C36010.
6.2 The UNS designated composition limits do not preclude the possible presence of other unnamed elements; however,
analysis shall be made regularly only for the minor elements listed in Table 1, plus either copper or zinc, or plus all major elements
except one. The major element that is not analyzed shall be determined by difference between the sum of those elements analyzed
and 100 %. By agreement between producer or supplier and purchaser, analysis may be required and limits established for the
elements not cited. Percentage content of elements shown as “remainder” (rem.) is calculated by difference.
