Standard Test Method for Obtaining and Testing Specimens of Hardened Lightweight Insulating Concrete for Compressive Strength

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method is used to determine the compressive strength of hardened lightweight insulating concrete using samples taken from the field. The test results can be used to determine specification compliance when results of tests on specimens molded at the time of construction are not available or are defective, and to establish the strength properties of existing construction.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers obtaining, preparing, and testing specimens of hardened, lightweight, insulating concrete made with either lightweight aggregate conforming to Specification C332 or using preformed foam made from a foaming agent conforming to Specification C869/C869M and having an oven-dry density not exceeding 800 kg/m3  [50 lb/ft3].
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM C513/C513M-11(2019) defines a standardized test method for obtaining and testing specimens of hardened lightweight insulating concrete to determine compressive strength. Developed by ASTM International, this standard provides a consistent procedure for sampling, preparing, and evaluating hardened lightweight insulating concrete made with lightweight aggregate (as per ASTM C332) or preformed foam (as per ASTM C869/C869M). This test method is crucial for evaluating the in-place properties of lightweight insulating concrete in new or existing constructions, especially when initial molded specimens are unavailable or compromised.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability

    • Applies to hardened lightweight insulating concrete with oven-dry density ≤800 kg/m³ [50 lb/ft³], using either lightweight aggregates or preformed foam.
    • Specifies the method for obtaining, preparing, and testing samples directly from the field.
    • Addresses both SI and inch-pound units, emphasizing that measurements should not be mixed to ensure compliance.
  • Significance and Use

    • Offers a reliable way to determine the compressive strength of lightweight insulating concrete when molded test specimens are missing or faulty.
    • Supports evaluation of existing structures to establish compliance with project or regulatory requirements.
    • Provides essential data for structural assessment and quality assurance in construction and renovation projects.
  • Testing and Reporting Procedures

    • Guidance on sample removal, specimen preparation, and ensuring the integrity of the test sample.
    • Requirements for specimen shapes (cube and prism), size tolerances, and drying/conditioning for testing.
    • Detailed procedures for compressive strength testing, including loading rates, measurement accuracy, and calculation of results.
    • Specifies the important data to be recorded and reported for each tested specimen, such as source, dimensions, age, maximum load, and calculated density.
  • Precision and Bias

    • Includes standards for single-operator and multi-laboratory precision, reflecting the expected variability in results.
    • Emphasizes the need for careful laboratory practices and consistency in testing.
  • Safety and Compliance

    • Reminds users to implement appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and ensure conformity with local regulations.

Applications

ASTM C513/C513M-11(2019) is widely used in various stages and types of construction involving lightweight insulating concrete. Practical applications include:

  • Quality Assurance: On-site verification of compressive strength for lightweight insulating concrete in flooring, roofing, and thermal insulation applications.
  • Existing Structure Assessment: Determining if in-place materials meet current structural requirements, particularly in refurbishment or change-of-use scenarios.
  • Specification Compliance: Providing a means to demonstrate that concrete used in construction meets project-specific or regulatory compressive strength criteria.
  • Failure Investigation: Supporting forensic analysis when molded test specimens are lost, damaged, or otherwise unavailable.

Related Standards

Implementing ASTM C513/C513M-11(2019) may also involve reference to the following standards:

  • ASTM C332: Specification for Lightweight Aggregates for Insulating Concrete
  • ASTM C869/C869M: Specification for Foaming Agents Used in Making Preformed Foam for Cellular Concrete
