Standard Specification for Coal Tar Adhesive

ABSTRACT
This specification covers coal tar adhesive with or without polymer modification suitable for brush, spray, squeegee and trowel application to coal tar built up and coal tar modified bitumen membrane roofings and flashings. The adhesive shall be classified as: Type I and Type II. Coal tar adhesive shall consist of a processed coal tar base, volatile solvents, mineral stabilizers, with or without polymer modifiers excluding asbestos, mixed to a smooth consistency. The following test methods shall be performed to conform with the requirements of the material: nonvolatile matter; water; ash; lap shear strength; and peel strength.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers coal tar adhesive with or without polymer modification suitable for brush, spray, squeegee, and trowel application to coal tar built-up and coal tar modified bitumen membrane roofings and flashings.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM D6753/D6753M-02(2023) Standard Specification for Coal Tar Adhesive is an internationally recognized standard developed by ASTM International. This specification covers coal tar adhesives - with or without polymer modification - intended for brush, spray, squeegee, and trowel applications. The standard is primarily applicable to coal tar built-up and coal tar modified bitumen membrane roofings and flashings. ASTM D6753/D6753M provides critical guidelines to ensure adhesives meet performance, consistency, and safety requirements, enabling reliable use in roofing construction and repair.

Key Topics

  • Adhesive Types:
    • Type I: Designed for brush, squeegee, or spray applications in field sheet membrane installation.
    • Type II: Formulated for heavy brushing or trowel use, typically in the repair or installation of roof flashings.
  • Material Composition:
    • Made from a processed coal tar base, blended with volatile solvents, mineral stabilizers, and optional polymer modifiers (excluding asbestos).
    • Must be mixed to a smooth consistency for ease of application.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Specified minimum content of non-volatile matter and maximum water content.
    • Defined limits for ash content in the nonvolatile matter.
    • Adhesion properties measured by peel strength and lap shear strength at various conditioning times and temperatures.
  • Testing & Uniformity:
    • Adhesive samples must remain uniform with no separation or settling after 72 hours at room temperature.
    • Performance must be verified using standardized test methods for nonvolatile matter, water content, ash, lap shear strength, and peel strength.

Applications

Coal tar adhesive, as defined in ASTM D6753/D6753M, is widely utilized in the construction and maintenance of roofing systems where coal tar built-up or coal tar modified bitumen membranes are used. Its primary applications include:

  • Installation of Membranes: Adhesives are applied by brush, spray, squeegee, or trowel to bond membrane sheets in the field or along seams.
  • Flashings: Ensures watertight seals around penetrations, edges, and roof details using heavy-duty or trowel-grade adhesives.
  • Roof Repairs: Type II adhesives are ideal for patching or reinforcing coal tar roofing and flashings, providing lasting adhesion and flexibility.
  • Compatibility: Specifically designed for use with coal tar systems to maintain chemical and physical integrity over time.

By following ASTM D6753/D6753M, manufacturers, contractors, and inspectors can ensure that coal tar adhesives will deliver predictable performance, durability, and safety in roofing projects.

Related Standards

Those using ASTM D6753/D6753M may also reference the following standards to ensure comprehensive quality control and compatibility:

  • ASTM D903: Test Method for Peel or Stripping Strength of Adhesive Bonds. Used for measuring adhesive bond resistance.
  • ASTM D6511/D6511M: Test Methods for Solvent Bearing Bituminous Compounds. Provides procedures for sampling, conditioning, and testing adhesive strength.
  • ASTM D449: Standard Specification for Asphalt Used in Dampproofing and Waterproofing.
  • ASTM D312: Specification for Asphalt Used in Roofing.

Understanding and applying these related ASTM roofing and adhesive standards helps ensure the proper performance of coal tar adhesives in diverse roofing environments and aligns with international best practices in construction and waterproofing.
