ISO/TC 96/SC 8 - Jib cranes

This document specifies general requirements for limiting and indicating devices for cranes that are applicable to loads and motions, performance and environment. These devices restrict operation and/or provide the operator or other persons with operational information. The specific requirements for the various types of crane are given in the other parts of the ISO 10245 series.

The ISO 4306 series establishes a vocabulary of the most commonly used terms in the field of cranes. This document defines the terms related to jib type cranes. Mobile cranes, tower cranes, railway cranes, and offshore cranes are excluded. Annex A contains a diagram showing the different types of jib cranes.

This part of ISO 12488 specifies tolerances for construction assemblies and operational conditions of cranes and
associated crane tracks as defined in ISO 4306-1. The purpose of the requirements in this part of ISO 12488 is
to promote safe operation and achievement of the expected life of components by the elimination of excessive
load effects due to deviations or misalignments from the normal dimensions of the structure.
Tolerances given are extreme values. The elastic deformations due to load effects are outside the scope of this
part of ISO 12488. These will need to be taken into account at the design stage using other criteria to achieve
the intended operation and performance.
Specific values for particular crane types are given in other parts of ISO 12488.

ISO 11660-4:2012 establishes the particular requirements relating to access, guards and restraints for jib cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1.

ISO 10972-4:2007 establishes the particular requirements relating to mechanisms for jib cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1. These particular requirements concern general layout and design of mechanisms, selection and/or design requirements of components, and instructions for manufacture, mounting, installation and testing.

ISO 12480-4:2007 establishes required practices for the safe use of jib cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1. It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 12480-1.

ISO/TR 25599:2005 collects the design, manufacturing, use and maintenance requirements and recommendations for jib cranes in ISO and IEC International Standards.

ISO 8686-4:2005 applies the general design principles set forth in ISO 8686-1 to jib cranes, i.e. jib-type cranes other than those offshore, tower, mobile, railway, gantry and overhead cranes covered in other parts of ISO 8686-1, as defined in ISO 4306-1, and presents loads and load combinations appropriate for use in proof-of-competence calculations for the steel structures of jib cranes.

ISO 12488-4:2004 specifies tolerances of cranes and tracks and applies to jib cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1. Tracks for jib cranes negotiating curves are not covered by ISO12488-4:2004.

ISO 10245-4:2004 specifies the requirements for devices which limit and/or indicate the loads, motions, performance and environment of jib-type cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1, other than offshore, tower, mobile and railway cranes, which are covered in the other parts of ISO 10245.

This part of ISO 8566 specifies the requirements for cabins for jib cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1.

Establishes the arrangement, requirements and direction of movement of the basic controls for travelling, slewing, lifting, hoisting and lowering operations. Refers to ISO 4306-1 and ISO 7752-1.

Specifies generally the information to be provided by the purchaser and the manufacturer so that the most suitable crane can be supplied for the duty requirements and service conditions. Refers to ISO 4301-1 und ISO 7363.

Specifies information to be provided by a purchaser in enquiring for or ordering a jib crane and by a manufacturer in tendering for or supplying this crane. Annex A gives a format for information to be provided by the purchaser.

Establishes classifications for jib cranes, based on the number of operating cycles to be carried out during the expected life of the crane and a load spectrum factor which represents the nominal state of loading. Should be read in conjunction with ISO 4306-1.
