ISO/TC 70/WG 10 - Reciprocating internal combustion engine driven generating sets
Groupes électrogènes entraînés par moteurs à combustion interne
General Information
This document specifies the principal characteristics of alternating current (a.c.) generators under the control of their excitation control system when used for reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine driven generating set applications and supplements the requirements given in IEC 60034-1. It covers the use of such a.c. generators for land and marine applications, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. NOTE For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies, high-rise buildings, operation parallel with the grid), supplementary requirements can be necessary. The provisions of this document can be regarded as the basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For a.c. generating sets driven by other reciprocating-type prime movers (e.g. steam engines) the provisions of this document can be used as basis for establishing these requirements.

It applies to Alternating Current (a.c.) generating sets driven by Reciprocating Internal Combustion (RIC) engines for land and marine use excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies and high-rise buildings), supplementary requirements may be necessary. The provisions of ISO 8528-4:2005 should be regarded as a basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For generating sets driven by other prime movers (e.g. steam engines) ISO 8528-4:2005 should be regarded as a basis for establishing these requirements.

This document specifies the test methods to be used for characterizing an entire generating set. It applies to alternating current (AC) generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. This document also provides simulation methods as an alternative method for assessing the generating set capability to meet the requirements defined in ISO 8528-5. For some specific applications (e.g., essential hospital supplies, high-rise buildings, operation in parallel with the grid), supplementary requirements can be necessary. The provisions of this document are intended as a basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For AC generating sets driven by other reciprocating-type prime movers (e.g., steam engines), this document is intended as a basis for establishing these requirements. NOTE Existing test methods for the engine (ISO 3046-1 and ISO 3046-3) and generator (IEC 60034-2) are applicable for those components. The generating set manufacturer is responsible for specifying these characteristics and the tests to be performed to verify them.

This document specifies design and performance criteria arising out of the combination of a reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine and an alternating current (a.c.) generator when operating as a unit. This unit can run paralleling or not to the grid. It applies to a.c. generating sets driven by RIC engines for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies and high-rise buildings), supplementary requirements can be necessary. The provisions of this document are a basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For generating sets driven by other reciprocating-type prime movers (e.g. steam engines), the provisions of this document can be used as a basis for establishing these requirements.

It applies to a.c. generating sets driven by RIC engines for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies and high-rise buildings), supplementary requirements can be necessary. The provisions of ISO 8528-5:2013 are a basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For generating sets driven by other reciprocating-type prime movers (e.g. steam engines), the provisions of ISO 8528-5:2013 can be used as a basis for establishing these requirements.

ISO 8528-1:2005 defines various classifications for the application, rating and performance of generating sets consisting of a Reciprocating Internal Combustion (RIC) engine, Alternating Current (a.c.) generator and any associated controlgear, switchgear and auxiliary equipment. It applies to a.c. generating sets driven by RIC engines for land and marine use excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and Iocomotives. For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies, high-rise buildings), supplementary requirements may be necessary. The provisions of ISO 8528-1:2005 should be regarded as the basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. For other reciprocating-type prime movers (e.g. sewage-gas engines, steam engines), the provisions of ISO 8528-1:2005 should be used as a basis for establishing these requirements. Generating sets meeting the requirements of ISO 8528-1:2005 are used to generate electrical power for continuous, peak-load and standby applications. The classifications laid down in ISO 8528-1:2005 are intended to help understanding between manufacturer and customer.

ISO 8528-2:2005 specifies the principal characteristics of a Reciprocating Internal Combustion (RIC) engine when used for alternating current (a.c.) generating set applications. It applies to RIC engines for a.c. generating sets for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies, high rise buildings), supplementary requirements may be necessary. The provisions of ISO 8528-2:2005 should be regarded as the basis for establishing any supplementary requirements. The terms which define the speed governing and speed characteristics of RIC engines are listed and explained where they apply specifically to the use of the engine for driving a.c. generators.
