Heat transfer to and through the ground
To draft standards for the calculation of heat transfer to and through the ground and for the design of buildings foundations for protection against frost heave
General Information
This Standard gives simplified procedures for the thermal design of building foundations so as to avoid the occurence of frost heave. It applies to foundations on frost-susceptible ground, and includes buildings with both slab-on-ground floors and suspended floors. It covers heated and unheated buildings, but other situations requiring frost protection (for example roads, water pipes in the ground) are not included. The Standard is not applicable to cold stores and ice rinks.

This standard gives methods of calculation of heat transfer coefficients and heat flow rates, for building elements in thermal contact with the ground, including stab-on-ground floors, suspended floors and basements. It applies to building elements, or parts of them, below a horizontal plane in the bounding walls of the building situated - for stab-on-ground floors and suspended floors, at the level of the inside floor surface; - for basements, at the level of the external ground surface.
