CEN/TC 177/WG 2 - Non-fines lightweight concrete components
Non-fines lightweight concrete components
General Information
This European Standard is for prefabricated components of lightweight aggregate concrete (LAC) with open structure and with structural or non-structural reinforcement intended to be used in building construction
a) for structural elements:
- loadbearing wall components (solid, hollow core or multilayer);
- retaining wall components (solid) with or without surcharge loading;
- roof components (solid, hollow core or multilayer);
- floor components (solid, hollow core or multilayer);
- linear components (beams or piers).
b) for non-structural elements:
- non-loadbearing wall components (e.g. for partition walls);
- cladding components (without fixtures) intended to be used for external facades of buildings;
- small box culverts used to form channels for the enclosure of services;
- components for noise barriers.
NOTE 1 In addition to their loadbearing and encasing function, components can also be used to provide fire resistance, sound insulation and thermal insulation.
Components covered by this European Standard are only intended to be subjected to predominantly non-dynamic actions, unless special measures are introduced in the relevant clauses of this European Standard.
The term "reinforced" relates to reinforcement used for both structural and non-structural purposes.
This European Standard does not cover:
- rules for the application of these components in structures;
- joints (except their strength);
- fixtures;
- finishes for external components, such as tiling.
NOTE 2 LAC components can be used in noise barriers if they are designed to fulfil also the requirements of EN 14388.

This document covers, regardless of if manufactured in factories or in temporary plants on site under the same conditions, precast concrete elements made of lightweight concrete with an open structure, and with a dry density between 400 and 2000 kg/m3 intended for:
— solid, hollow core and multilayer load-bearing wall elements;
— solid, hollow core and multilayer non-load-bearing wall elements;
— retaining wall elements, excluding retaining walls intended to retain tanks or reservoirs of liquids and diaphragm walls (concrete sheet piling);
— solid, hollow core and multilayer roof elements, excluding ribbed floor elements and floor slabs elements;
— solid, hollow core and multilayer floor elements excluding floor elements with the intended use to carry traffic loads;
— solid and hollow core beams;
— solid piers;
— cladding elements;
— box culverts;
— components for noise barriers.
NOTE In addition to their loadbearing and encasing function, elements can also be used to provide fire resistance, sound insulation and thermal insulation.
Recycled lightweight concrete with an open structure (other than closed-loop recycling during production) is covered by this document.
Reused precast concrete elements made of lightweight concrete with an open structure are covered by this document.

This document provides guidelines for the application of reinforced LAC 1) components according to EN 1520 in building structures and covers the following types of structural components: - loadbearing wall components (solid); - roof components (solid, hollow core and multilayer); - floor components (solid, hollow core and multilayer); - linear components (beams and piers) and the following types of non-structural components: - non-loadbearing wall components (partition walls); - cladding components. LAC components are industrially manufactured individual parts. A combined action of these parts requires usually the aid of non LAC materials (e.g. reinforcement, metal plates, fixings, anchorages, adhesives, mortar, concrete). The application covers aspects of: - material properties; - design of joints;
- design with components; - means of anchorage or fixtures; - construction and workmanship. The design rules for the LAC components are defined in EN 1520, annex A (Design by calculation) and EN 1520, annex B (Design by testing).
