Overview

EN 13630-9:2025 - "Explosives for civil uses - Detonating cords and safety fuses - Part 9" specifies a laboratory test method for verification of transmission of detonation from one detonating cord to another. It applies to detonating cords used in civil explosives (e.g., mining, quarrying, demolition) and explicitly does not apply to safety fuses. The standard updates and supersedes EN 13630-9:2004 and aligns with other parts of the EN 13630 series.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Objective: Confirm that a detonating cord (donor cord) reliably initiates an attached detonating cord (acceptor cord).
  • Test arrangement: Connect donor and acceptor cords per connection methods specified in EN 13630-1:2025 and initiate the donor cord with a specified detonator.
  • Verification methods (apparatus):
    • Witness plate (per EN 13630-7:2025), or
    • Witness detonator (per EN 13630-7:2025), or
    • Detonation velocity (VOD) measuring system (per EN 13630-11:2025).
  • Acceptance criteria: Complete detonation indicated by
    • an indentation on the witness plate,
    • initiation of the witness detonator, or
    • recorded VOD ≥ 90% of the VOD specified in EN 13630-1:2025.
  • Sampling and test conditions: For each connection method, test five acceptor cord samples. Test at (23 ± 10) °C and (50 ± 20) % relative humidity. Attach verification devices at least 500 mm from the connection point.
  • Safety and preparation: Seal cord ends with non-reactive means (e.g., paper or plastic tape, rubber cups) to prevent loss of explosive material or moisture ingress.
  • Result expression: “Pass” only if all five test pieces demonstrate complete detonation; otherwise “Fail.”
  • Test report: Must include reference to EN 13630-9:2025, cord identifications, ambient conditions, connection and detonator details, verification method, individual test results, and overall pass/fail.

Practical applications and users

  • Manufacturers of detonating cords using EN 13630-9:2025 to demonstrate product reliability.
  • Accredited test laboratories performing conformity and quality verification.
  • End-users in mining, quarrying, civil demolition, and construction blasting who require documented proof of reliable detonation transfer.
  • Regulatory and procurement bodies seeking conformity evidence for market access within the EU (see Annex ZA and Directive 2014/28/EU).

Related standards
