Overview
SIST EN 480-13:2015 is a key European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements and test methods for producing a reference masonry mortar. This mortar is specifically designed for testing mortar admixtures as defined in EN 934-3. The standard outlines the constituent materials, mix proportions, and mixing procedures to achieve a mortar with a prescribed consistence. Additionally, it provides guidance on determining the water reduction when comparing a test mix containing admixtures with a control mix without admixtures.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and researchers involved in the development and quality control of mortar admixtures used in concrete, mortar, and grout applications.
Key Topics
Constituent Materials:
- Cement: Requires CEM I cement of strength class 42.5 or 52.5 complying with EN 197-1, with specified chemical composition and fineness.
- Sand: Natural sand with a defined grading and relative density between 2.5 and 2.8, oven-dry.
- Mixing Water: Water meeting the requirements of EN 1008, ensuring purity suitable for mortar mixing.
Reference Masonry Mortar:
- A standardized mix is produced both as a control (without admixture) and a test mix (with admixture).
- Consistence is measured according to EN 1015-4, aiming for a controlled consistency level (40 ± 5 mm).
- Air content of control mix should not exceed 5% by volume (EN 1015-7 method A).
Mixing Procedure:
- Detailed steps including conditioning materials to 20 ± 2°C, staged addition of water and admixture, and specific mixing times with both low and high speeds to ensure homogeneity.
- Procedures accommodate testing after standing and extended mixing conditions.
Water Reduction Calculation:
- Water reduction is calculated to assess admixture efficiency, especially for air-entraining and plasticizing admixtures.
- The formula compares water quantities of control and test mixes, expressed as a percentage.
Test Reporting:
- Requirements for comprehensive documentation including cement and sand details, mixing parameters, water content, air content, admixture dosage, and water reduction results.
Applications
- Mortar Admixture Testing: Provides a controlled reference mortar for evaluating the performance of admixtures, ensuring reliability in research and quality control.
- Product Development: Assists manufacturers in formulating new admixtures with predictable effects on mortar properties such as water reduction and workability.
- Quality Assurance: Enables laboratories to conduct consistent, repeatable tests that comply with European norms, vital for regulatory compliance and product certification.
- Construction Materials Research: Supports innovation in masonry mortar by providing a standardized testing environment for admixture effects on fresh and hardened mortar.
Related Standards
- EN 934-3: Defines the specifications, conformity, and marking for admixtures used in masonry mortar, closely linked with EN 480-13 for test methods.
- EN 196 Series (EN 196-1, EN 196-2, EN 196-6): Methods of testing cement, including strength determination, chemical analysis, and fineness measurement-critical for specifying cement used in reference mortar.
- EN 197-1: Cement composition and performance requirements establishing the baseline for cement used in reference mixes.
- EN 1015-4 and EN 1015-7: Methods for determining mortar consistence and air content, respectively, used as standard procedures in mortar testing.
- EN 1008: Specifies quality and suitability of mixing water for concrete and mortar, ensuring reproducible test results.
Adhering to SIST EN 480-13:2015 helps standardize mortar admixture testing across Europe, improving product reliability and facilitating harmonized quality control in the construction industry. This standard is indispensable for professionals focusing on mortar performance enhancement through admixtures and contributes to the advancement of sustainable and efficient masonry construction practices.
