SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 15106-2:2005, based on ISO 15106-2:2003. It specifies an instrumental method, using an infrared detection sensor, for determining the water vapour transmission rate of plastic film, plastic sheeting and multi-layer structures including plastics. It is used by laboratories, manufacturers and quality teams that need comparable WVTR data for barrier materials.

What does SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 specify?

SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 specifies the infrared detection sensor method for water vapour transmission rate testing. In the ISO 15106 series, this part sits alongside the humidity detection sensor method and the electrolytic detection sensor method, so it tells users which test principle to apply when the infrared approach is wanted.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 13:

  • scope
  • normative references
  • terms and definitions
  • principle
  • test specimens
  • conditioning
  • apparatus
  • test conditions
  • procedure
  • calculation
  • test result
  • precision
  • test report

That structure matters in practice because it takes a lab from sample preparation through to the final reported WVTR value.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005?

Specimens and conditioning

SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 requires specimens that are representative, free from wrinkles, creases and pinholes, and of uniform thickness. Each specimen must be larger than the transmission area of the cell and mounted hermetically, because leakage or poor fit will distort the measured vapour flow.

The standard uses three specimens unless the interested parties agree otherwise, and it allows more specimens where that gives a more representative result. Thickness is measured at three equally spaced points in accordance with ISO 4593, and specimens are conditioned at 23 °C ± 2 °C and (50 ± 10) % RH for the time stated for the material.

Apparatus and test conditions

SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 describes a transmission cell with a wet chamber and a dry chamber, an infrared sensor, a pump, a flow meter, a drying tube and valves. The transmission area must be between 5 cm² and 100 cm², the cell temperature held within ± 0.5 °C of the test temperature, and the flow meter able to measure 5 ml to 100 ml per minute.

The infrared detection sensor must detect a change in water vapour content of either 1 µg per litre or 1 mm³/dm³, which is given as 1 ppm by volume. The drying tube must dry the air to the sensor’s detection limit or lower, and maintenance and calibration follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Preferred test conditions are listed as temperature and RH combinations, and any other conditions must be agreed between the interested parties.

Procedure, calculation and reporting

SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 starts with a reference test specimen, then measures each test specimen against it. The operator first checks zero level with dried air, prepares a suitable saturated solution to set the lower chamber humidity, mounts the specimen hermetically, and then waits for the sensor output to reach steady state within ± 5 %.

The WVTR is calculated from the reference specimen, the test specimen, their steady-state voltages and their transmission areas. The final test result is the arithmetic mean of the specimen results, rounded according to the rule in the standard. The test report must identify the standard used, the test conditions, the reference specimen, sample details, specimen preparation, the side exposed to water vapour, area, thickness, number of specimens, conditioning, any steady-state instability, the result and the test date.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 define?

  • Water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) - the amount of water vapour that passes through unit area of a test specimen per unit time under specified conditions.
  • Reference test specimen - a specimen with known WVTR, or one measured in accordance with ISO 2528, used to support the test calculation.
  • Transmission cell - the two-chamber cell that holds the specimen between the wet and dry sides during the test.
  • Relative humidity (RH) - the humidity level used in conditioning and test conditions.
  • Steady state - the condition where the infrared sensor output has stabilized enough for the test to be read and calculated.
  • Test specimen - the sample of film, sheeting or multi-layer structure taken for measurement.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005?

SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 is used in the plastics film and sheeting sector, especially for barrier materials and multi-layer structures. Test laboratories use it to generate WVTR values, manufacturers use it for product development and routine quality control, and buyers or specifiers use it when comparing packaging or sheet materials for moisture barrier performance.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 takes over ISO 15106-2:2003 and was approved by CEN as EN ISO 15106-2:2005 without modifications.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005?

  • ISO 2528:1995 - provides the gravimetric dish method used to determine the WVTR of the reference test specimen.
  • ISO 4593:1993 - gives the mechanical scanning method for measuring specimen thickness.
  • ISO 15106-1 - the humidity detection sensor method in the same series.
  • ISO 15106-3 - the electrolytic detection sensor method in the same series.

What does the SIST EN ISO 15106-2:2005 document contain?

The document contains the test principle, specimen requirements, conditioning, apparatus description, preferred test conditions, procedure, calculation, test result rules, precision statement and test report items. It also includes Figure 1 for the example apparatus and Table 1 for the preferred temperature and RH combinations. Clause 10 gives the calculation basis, which is useful for software, spreadsheets and laboratory calculation sheets, while Clause 13 lists the report items needed for traceable testing.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
