Overview

EN 13034:2005+A1:2009 is the CEN European standard that sets minimum performance requirements for chemical protective clothing offering limited protective performance against liquid chemicals - commonly referred to as Type 6 (whole suits) and Type PB[6] (partial body protection). The standard covers single‑use and re‑usable garments intended for protection from light spray, liquid aerosols or low‑pressure, low‑volume splashes where a complete molecular permeation barrier is not required.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and garment types
    • Type 6: suits that cover at least the trunk and limbs (one‑piece coveralls, two‑piece suits), with or without hood, boot‑socks or boot‑covers.
    • Type PB[6]: partial body items (aprons, sleeves, coats) - not subject to the whole‑suit spray test.
  • Material performance (referenced tests from EN 14325)
    • Abrasion, tear, tensile and puncture resistance
    • Liquid repellency: minimum performance level 3 for at least one test chemical
    • Resistance to liquid penetration: minimum performance level 2 for at least one test chemical
    • Materials must not cause skin irritation and manufacturers’ cleaning/reuse instructions apply.
  • Seams, joins and assemblages
    • Seams must prevent liquid penetration and allow run‑off.
    • Seam strength tested per EN ISO 13935‑2; minimum class 1 seam performance.
  • Whole‑suit spray (mist) test
    • Type 6 suits are tested using a reduced whole‑suit spray method (variant of EN ISO 17491‑4) after a practical “seven movements” sequence executed by a human subject to simulate realistic wear and movement.
    • Three suits are tested after preconditioning/cleaning (if applicable).
  • Marking and manufacturer information
    • Requirements include care, cleaning limits (if none specified, five cleaning cycles are applied for testing), and instructions about combining with other PPE.

Applications and users

EN 13034 is intended for situations with a low risk of chemical exposure: protection from light sprays, mists, aerosols or accidental small splashes. Typical users and stakeholders:

  • PPE manufacturers and designers validating Type 6 / PB[6] garments
  • Occupational health & safety managers and procurement teams selecting appropriate chemical protective clothing
  • Test laboratories performing EN 14325 / EN ISO 17491‑4 based evaluations
  • Employers in laboratories, maintenance, light chemical handling and other low‑exposure environments conducting risk assessments

Related standards

  • EN 14325 (test methods and classification for chemical protective materials)
  • EN ISO 17491‑4 (spray/mist penetration test - variant used)
  • EN ISO 13935‑2 (seam tensile testing)
  • EN 340 (general protective clothing requirements)
  • EN 23758 (care labelling)
  • Links to EU Directive 89/686/EEC (noted in annex for legal relationship)

EN 13034 helps balance wearer comfort and adequate protection for low‑hazard tasks by defining practical, testable limits for limited‑performance chemical protective clothing.

This article discusses the SIST EN 13034:2005+A1:2009 standard for protective clothing against liquid chemicals. The standard outlines the requirements for limited use and re-useable limited performance chemical protective clothing. This type of clothing is designed to provide protection against light sprays, liquid aerosols, and low pressure, low volume splashes, but it does not offer a complete barrier against liquid permeation at the molecular level. The standard covers both chemical protective suits (Type 6) and partial body protection (Type PB [6]). Chemical protective suits cover and protect the trunk and limbs, while partial body protection only covers specific parts of the body. The standard specifies minimum requirements for the connections between different parts of Type 6 suits, but partial body protection should not be tested using the whole suit test.
