SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 for communication cables. It updates the common design rules and construction requirements for halogen free flame retardant insulation compounds, so cable makers and material suppliers know how to qualify the compound grades used in these cables.
What does SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 specify?
SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 specifies the amended material requirements for halogen free flame retardant insulation compounds used in communication cables. It is a material specification, centered on one replaced requirements table in Clause 3.
The document is organized as a foreword and Clause 3, Requirements. Clause 3 replaces the earlier table with the updated compound grades, test methods, and property checks that apply to these insulation materials.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007?
Clause 3 is built around Table 1, which sets out the compound grades and the checks used to qualify them. In practice, this is the part that tells a manufacturer or buyer whether a compound is suitable for a given cable design.
Grade selection and temperature use
The amended table defines several insulation-compound grades, including a new high-temperature grade mentioned in the foreword. The key practical point is that each grade is tied to a service temperature, so the compound must match the cable's intended operating conditions.
Mechanical performance before and after ageing
The table requires tensile strength and elongation at break in the delivered state, and then checks how those properties change after ageing. This matters because a compound must survive processing and still keep enough mechanical strength after heat exposure in service.
Low-temperature and dimensional behavior
Low-temperature bending must show no cracking, and shrinkage after heating is limited. For users, that means the insulation should remain flexible in cold handling and should not pull back or distort after thermal exposure.
Heat and load behavior
Heat shock is marked as not applicable for the listed grades, while the hot set test applies to cross linked insulation. The thermoplastic grades are also checked for pressure at high temperature, which helps show whether the material softens too much under load.
Fire-related and electrical properties
The table includes oxygen index, corrosivity, smoke opacity, and toxicity, together with volume resistivity and dielectric properties. In practice, these properties help users choose a compound for fire performance, electrical insulation, and signal behavior in the finished cable.
Test methods used
The amendment points to established methods such as EN 60811 series tests, HD 405.3, IEC 60754-2, and IEC 60250. That gives laboratories and suppliers a common basis for qualification and comparison.
What terms does SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 define?
- Halogen free - an insulation compound formulated without halogens, used where lower halogen-related emissions are wanted in fire conditions.
- Flame retardant - a material intended to resist flame spread and help the cable meet fire-performance targets.
- Cross linked insulation - insulation whose polymer structure has been cross linked to improve heat resistance and shape stability.
- Thermoplastic insulation - insulation that softens when heated and must therefore be used within its rated temperature range.
- Oxygen index - a measure used as an indicator of how readily the material supports combustion, and the note says it can guide material selection.
- Volume resistivity - a measure of how strongly the insulation resists electrical current through its volume.
- Dissipation factor - a dielectric loss measure that helps assess the electrical behavior of the insulation.
- Hot set test - a heat-and-load test used to check whether cross linked insulation keeps its shape under stress.
Who uses SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007?
Cable manufacturers use SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 when selecting or approving insulation compounds for flame-retardant communication cables. Material suppliers and test laboratories use it for product qualification, ageing checks, and electrical and fire-related testing.
Quality managers, buyers, and cable specifiers use the document to compare candidate compounds and document that the chosen insulation grade fits the cable's temperature and performance needs. It is also useful when a project needs a halogen free compound with a defined fire-related profile.
What changed in SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 from the previous edition?
This amendment modifies EN 50290-2-26:2002. It introduces a new halogen free insulation compound grade for high temperature and replaces the existing requirements table in Clause 3.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007?
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 50290-2-26:2002 | Base document amended by this text |
| EN 60811-1-1 | Tensile strength and elongation in the delivered state |
| EN 60811-1-2 | Ageing test conditions and post-ageing mechanical checks |
| EN 60811-1-3 | Shrinkage testing |
| EN 60811-1-4 | Low-temperature bending test |
| EN 60811-2-1 | Hot set test |
| EN 60811-3-1 | Heat shock and pressure-at-high-temperature tests |
| HD 405.3 | Oxygen index measurement |
| IEC 60754-2 | Corrosivity check |
| IEC 60250 | Dielectric constant and dissipation factor |
| IEC 60695-6 | Possible aid for selecting materials by fire behavior |
What does the SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 document contain?
The amendment is centered on one replacement table in Clause 3. That table brings together the compound grades, the test method for each property, and the required or indicative results used to qualify the material.
It covers mechanical behavior, ageing, low-temperature performance, shrinkage, high-temperature pressure behavior, oxygen index, corrosivity, smoke opacity, toxicity, volume resistivity, dielectric properties, and hot set behavior. The notes explain how oxygen index can help with material selection and say that dielectric constant and dissipation factor are measured when required.
