Overview

EN 13763-11:2025 - published by CEN - defines standardized test methods to verify the resistance to damage by dropping for detonators, detonating cord relays and surface connectors used in civil explosives. The standard applies to non‑electric, electric and electronic detonators, plain and semi‑finished detonators, detonating cord relays and surface connectors (but excludes shock tubes and electronic initiation systems). Tests reproduce realistic accidental drops (loading baskets, bench edges, boreholes) and establish pass/fail criteria to ensure safety and market conformity.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: Drop test from 5 m onto a hard surface to assess risk of breakage or inadvertent detonation. Tests are either a free‑fall drop test or a guided drop test, depending on the article.
  • Sample selection:
    • Electric, non‑electric and electronic detonators: select 100 pieces (50 for free‑fall, 50 for guided or functioning checks); some pieces are prepared with shortened leads/shock tubes per the standard.
    • Plain detonators, semi‑finished detonators, surface connectors, detonating cord relays: select 50 pieces.
  • Apparatus: clamp capable of 5 ± 0.02 m height, concrete floor, metal guide tube (5 m length; inner diameter 1.5–2.0× test piece diameter), steel plate (≥100×100 mm, ≥10 mm thick), measuring and temperature devices, and appropriate means of initiation as referenced in EN 13763‑1:2025.
  • Procedures:
    • Free‑fall test: clamp release from 5 m; observe detonation on impact; if no detonation, initiate test piece to verify functionality.
    • Guided test: drop through a 5 m metal tube onto a steel plate; test orientations specified (base up/down for detonators).
  • Pass/fail rules:
    • For electric/non‑electric/electronic detonators: pass only if none detonate on free‑fall or guided drop, and all function when initiated after free‑fall.
    • For plain/semi‑finished detonators and detonating cord relays: pass if none detonate in the guided drop.
    • For surface connectors: pass if none detonate in free‑fall and all function when initiated after free‑fall.
  • Reporting: test temperature, identification of explosive, shell/lead lengths (where applicable), distance measurements and pass/fail observations per Clause 9. Annex ZA links the standard to Directive 2014/28/EU.

Applications and users

EN 13763-11:2025 is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of detonators, detonating cord relays and surface connectors - product design, QA and CE market placement.
  • Independent test laboratories conducting safety and conformity testing.
  • Regulators and procurement bodies verifying compliance with safety requirements for civil explosives.
  • Safety engineers and site managers who need documented evidence of drop‑resistance for handling, storage and transport risk assessments.

  • EN 13857-1:2025 - Vocabulary for explosives and pyrotechnics (normative reference).
  • Annex ZA in EN 13763-11:2025 clarifies the relationship with EU Directive 2014/28/EU.
