Overview
EN ISO 11111-3:2005/A2:2016 - Textile machinery - Safety requirements - Part 3: Nonwoven machinery (ISO 11111-3:2005/Amd 2:2016) is a CEN-endorsed amendment that updates the Part 3 safety requirements for nonwoven (nontissé / Vliesstoff) machinery. Approved by CEN on 5 May 2016 and published as an amendment to EN ISO 11111-3:2005, this document clarifies normative references, adds noise‑reduction cross-references and introduces new requirements for spunlace machines. It is intended to support conformity with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC where cited in the Official Journal.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and normative references
- Updates references to ISO 11111-1:2016 and amends references to other parts of the ISO 11111 series (including noted amendments).
- Adds ISO 23771 (design measures for reduction of noise emissions) and cross-references ISO 9902-series for noise measurement.
- Spunlace machines (new Clause 5.5)
- Defines spunlace process: web entanglement by high‑pressure water jets.
- Identifies mechanical hazards from water jets, jet strips, conveyor and drive rollers - e.g., squeezing, cutting, winding, plunging or puncture.
- Specifies general safety measures: fixed enclosing guards (casing) or movable guards with interlocking and guard-locking on the operating side.
- For operations that require access while the machine is running (threading up), the standard requires that the high‑pressure water jet cannot be activated; lifting/lowering devices must use hold‑to‑run control when movable guards are open.
- Where reduced speed operation with emergency stop is used, multiple, easily accessible emergency stop devices are required; the type and placement of devices (pushbuttons, rope switches, safety edges) must be determined by risk assessment.
- Other addressed areas
- Electrical equipment and control systems, starting/stopping, mechanical hazards, fluid systems, noise, ergonomics, elevated working positions, conveyors, fans, platforms and specific machine elements (rollers, shafts, doors, observation windows).
Practical applications and users
This amendment is essential for:
- Machine designers and manufacturers of nonwoven and spunlace equipment to meet safety-by-design and guarding requirements.
- Safety engineers and risk assessors implementing machine safeguarding, hold‑to‑run controls and emergency stop strategies.
- Compliance officers and conformity assessment bodies using the standard to demonstrate presumption of conformity with EU Directive 2006/42/EC.
- Plant managers and maintenance personnel responsible for safe operation, access procedures and ergonomic considerations.
