SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003
(Main)ElectroMagnetic Compatibility and Radio Spectrum Matters (ERM); Short Range Devices (SRD); Radio equipment to be used in the 25 MHz to 1 000 MHz frequency range with power levels ranging up to 500 mW; Part 2: Supplementary parameters not intended for conformity purposes
- Abstract
EN 300 220-1 covers a wide range of telecommunication, telemetry and generic non-speech applications, such as alarm systems, identification, detection, remote control etc., in the frequency band 25 - 1000 MHz with power levels up to 500 mW. The work programme is requested to take into account the comments received at the Vote stage of the EN 300 220-1 which were considered as Technical comments rather then Editorial and therefore could not be considered. In addition comments have been received on the definition of the Duty Cycle and clarification may be necessary. Similarly, for wideband equipment (subclause 8.6) an investigation has been requested into the suitability of the stated value for maximum frequency error, currently defined as shall not exceed 10% of the assigned band or wideband channel. Based on the completion of the above investigations, if necessary, an amendment to the published EN 300 220-1 will be prepared for approval for publication.

SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 220-2 for Short Range Devices (SRD) operating in the 25 MHz to 1 000 MHz range with power levels up to 500 mW. It specifies supplementary radio parameters that are not intended for conformity or regulatory assessment, and it is aimed at engineers, manufacturers, test labs and users who need a common way to judge receiver performance and application suitability.
What does SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 specify?
SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 specifies supplementary parameters for SRD radio equipment in the 25 MHz to 1 000 MHz range, including equipment with RF output connections or integral antennas and fixed, mobile or portable stations. It is organized around general scope material, references, definitions, receiver parameters in Clause 4, and an informative annex for social alarm systems.
The document focuses on parameters that help assess practical radio-link reliability and receiver performance. It is a product family standard, so specific application standards may replace it in part for particular uses.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Social alarm systems, including minimum effective radiated power guidance and receiver parameter use |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003?
SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 is centered on receiver performance. Clause 4 sets the main receiver parameters and their limits, while Annex A adds application guidance for social alarm systems.
Receiver sensitivity and how it is measured
Clause 4.1 defines maximum usable sensitivity using a conducted test at the receiver input. The signal level is judged by the receiver output response, using SND/ND, bit error ratio, or message acceptance ratio criteria. In practice, this tells a designer or test lab the weakest conducted signal the receiver should handle under normal test conditions.
Clause 4.2 defines average usable sensitivity for equipment with an integral or dedicated antenna. The receiver is measured in eight orientations, rotated in 45° steps, and the results are averaged. In practice, this matters because antenna position and enclosure effects can change real-world receiver performance.
Receiver selectivity and rejection
Clause 4.3 covers co-channel rejection. The limit depends on channel spacing, with different values for 20 or 25 kHz spacing and for spacing of 12.5 kHz or less. This helps confirm that a wanted signal can still be received when another signal is present on the same channel.
Clause 4.4 covers adjacent channel selectivity. The limit also depends on channel spacing, with separate levels for narrow and wider spacing. In practice, this shows whether the receiver can separate nearby channels without excessive interference.
Clause 4.5 sets the spurious response rejection requirement. The receiver must resist unwanted responses at out-of-band frequencies beyond one channel spacing. This is important when the product may face interference from signals outside the wanted band.
Clause 4.6 sets the intermodulation response rejection requirement. The receiver must tolerate two or more unwanted signals with a specific frequency relationship without unacceptable degradation. In practice, this is a common test for crowded radio environments.
Clause 4.7 sets the blocking or desensitization requirement. The receiver must keep working when strong unwanted signals are present, except at frequencies where spurious responses occur. This matters when nearby transmitters could overload the receiver front end.
Social alarm system guidance
Annex A applies to domestic or residential social alarm systems. It discusses fixed, mobile or portable transmitters working into fixed receivers, and it links the minimum radiated power to antenna effects, building attenuation, typical distance and operating frequency. For users of social alarm equipment, this annex is a practical guide to choosing a usable transmit power level and checking receiver limits.
What terms does SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 define?
- Alarm - radio communication used to indicate an alarm condition at a distant location.
- Conducted measurements - measurements made through a direct 50 Ω connection to the equipment under test.
- Radiated measurements - measurements based on the absolute measurement of a radiated field.
- Dedicated antenna - a removable antenna supplied and type tested with the radio equipment as an essential part of it.
- Integral antenna - a permanent fixed antenna, built in or otherwise integral to the equipment.
- Mobile station - equipment normally fixed in a vehicle.
- Portable station - equipment intended to be carried, attached or implanted.
- SRD (Short Range Device) - the short-range radio equipment family covered by the standard.
Who uses SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003?
SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 is used by manufacturers of SRD equipment, test laboratories, compliance engineers and quality managers who need receiver performance figures and measurement methods. It is also useful for system integrators working on alarms, identification, telecommand and telemetry products, especially where radio reliability and interference tolerance matter.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003?
The document refers to several companion standards and references:
- CEPT/ERC Recommendation 70-03 - gives the wider framework for Short Range Devices use.
- ETSI EN 300 113-1 - provides measurement methods for radio equipment with an antenna connector.
- ETSI EN 300 390-1 - provides measurement methods for radio equipment using an integral antenna.
- ITU-T Recommendation O.41 - provides the psophometer weighting network used in the SND/ND criterion.
- ETSI EN 300 220-1 - supplies technical characteristics and test methods for the same SRD family.
- ETSI ETR 027 - provides methods of measurement for private mobile radio equipment.
What does the SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 document contain?
SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 contains definitions, a symbol, abbreviations, and a receiver-parameter section with limits for sensitivity, rejection, selectivity and blocking. It includes one averaging formula in Clause 4.2 and tables for the sensitivity and selectivity limits.
Annex A adds application guidance for social alarm systems, including a measurement approach for minimum effective radiated power and a power-classification table. The document also points readers to other ETSI and ITU-T references for the detailed measurement setups used to assess receivers.
