Overview

EN 13630-6:2025 (CEN) specifies a standardized test method to verify the resistance to mechanical tension of detonating cords used in civil explosives. The standard applies only to detonating cords (not safety fuses) and is part of the EN 13630 series covering detonating cords and safety fuses. It was approved by CEN in September 2025 and supersedes EN 13630-6:2002.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Verification of tensile resistance of detonating cords; safety fuses excluded.
  • Test samples: Five test pieces, each (1.40 m ± 0.05) m long; ends sealed to prevent leakage and moisture ingress.
  • Apparatus: Fixed and mobile attaching devices, guiding pulley, blocking device, cable and weights to apply defined tensile load, environmental measurement (thermometer, hygrometer). Examples of attaching devices and test arrangement are illustrated in the standard.
  • Test conditions: Ambient conditions of (23 ± 10) °C and (50 ± 20) % relative humidity.
  • Procedure:
    • Maintain a test piece straight under slight tension (length under tension ≥ 1 m) for 1 hour.
    • Apply a rapid tensile load of 400 N by instant removal of the blocking device and hold for 30 minutes.
    • Repeat for up to five pieces; stop if any piece breaks.
    • After tension testing, verify reliable initiation without further length adjustment using the method in EN 13630-7:2025 (Clause 7.2).
  • Acceptance criteria:
    • Test result = “pass” if none of the five pieces breaks under 400 N for 30 minutes and all pieces initiate reliably per EN 13630-7.
    • Test result = “fail” if any piece breaks or any piece cannot be reliably initiated.
  • Test report: Must reference EN 13630-6:2025 and include identification of the detonating cord, environmental conditions during testing, per-piece outcomes, initiation results, and overall pass/fail.

Practical applications and users

  • Manufacturers of detonating cords for quality control and product development.
  • Accredited test laboratories performing conformity and type testing.
  • Regulatory bodies and notified authorities assessing conformity with Directive 2014/28/EU (informative Annex ZA).
  • Procurement and safety officers specifying tensile resistance requirements for handling, transport, and storage of detonating cords.
  • R&D and engineering teams validating cord designs against mechanical-handling stresses.
