Overview

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/A11:2025 is a key European standard focused on eye and face protection, specifically for sunglasses and related eyewear designed for general use. Prepared by the CEN Technical Committee on Eye Protective Equipment, this amendment updates the original 2022 version to ensure enhanced safety, quality, and regulatory compliance throughout the European Union and EFTA member states by March 2025.

This standard provides a comprehensive framework for manufacturers, regulators, and users involved with general-use sunglasses, offering important criteria related to performance, materials, design, and testing. It serves as a voluntary but strongly recommended means of conforming to the essential requirements of EU Regulation 2016/425 on personal protective equipment.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/A11:2025 covers sunglasses intended for everyday wear, offering protection against harmful solar radiation but excluding specific industrial or specialized protective eyewear types.

  • Protection Requirements
The standard outlines levels and classes of protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, visible light, and non-ionising radiation. Sunglasses must meet defined optical and physical criteria to reduce risks such as glare, UV damage, and eye strain.

  • Material and Design Specifications
It emphasizes the use of safe, high-quality materials that provide durability, comfort, and minimal user impediment. Surface finish and ergonomics are critical evaluation aspects to ensure wearer safety and usability.

  • Testing Methods
EN ISO 12312-1 references multiple ISO test standards covering optical properties, impact resistance, mechanical strength, and abrasion resistance. These tests guarantee consistent quality and compliance with safety thresholds.

  • Marking and Information
Manufacturers are required to provide clear instructions and marking on sunglasses, ensuring users receive essential safety information, performance ratings, and manufacturer details.

  • Conformity with EU Legislation
Compliance with this standard supports a presumption of conformity with Regulation 2016/425, streamlining product certification and market approval processes.

Applications

  • Everyday Sunglasses Manufacturing
This standard guides the production of consumer sunglasses, ensuring products deliver adequate eye protection while meeting legal and safety requirements.

  • Consumer Safety and Health
By adhering to the standard, sunglasses prevent harmful UV exposure and offer visual comfort, thus reducing the risk of eye diseases and enhancing overall eye health for users.

  • Retail and Quality Assurance
Retailers and distributors benefit from this standard by verifying product claims and assuring customers about the safety and efficacy of sunglasses sold in the market.

  • Regulatory Compliance
National standards bodies across Europe use this document to harmonize regulations and ensure manufacturers’ products can be legally marketed across member states without additional testing.

Related Standards

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/A11:2025 is linked to a suite of international and European standards critical for eyewear safety and testing:
