Overview
SIST EN 50632-2-6:2015 is a European standard developed by CLC that specifies the dust measurement procedure for electric motor-operated hammers. This part of the EN 50632 series defines particular requirements for hammers, supplementing and modifying the general dust measurement requirements outlined in EN 50632-1:2015. The standard aims to provide a uniform approach to measuring inhalable and respirable dust emissions generated during the operation of hammers, ensuring consistency, safety, and environmental protection.
The scope focuses on hammers, including both percussion hammers and rotary hammers, with detailed test procedures, operating conditions, and instrumentation used during dust measurement. By addressing dust generated during hammer operation, this standard helps in assessing occupational exposure and aids manufacturers in designing safer, cleaner tools.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Specifies that Part 2-6 applies exclusively to hammers, extending Part 1 with particular testing conditions for these tools.
- Test Procedures:
- Rotary hammers undergo tests drilling into concrete blocks to simulate real working conditions, with precise parameters for concrete composition, hole depth, and drill bit specifications.
- Percussion hammers are tested by chiseling reinforced concrete blocks with embedded steel rebars, detailing hammer mass categories and appropriate testing protocols.
- Concrete Formulation Requirements:
- Concrete used in tests must have a defined mix to ensure standardization, including cement, water, and aggregate proportions aimed at achieving 40 N/mm² compressive strength.
- Operating Conditions:
- Defines load, feed force, speed settings, tool bit types, and test durations to simulate realistic usage and capture accurate dust level data.
- Instrumentation: Compliance with instrumentation requirements as specified in EN 50632-1:2015.
- Reporting Requirements: Mandates documentation of mean respirable dust concentrations and any extensions to cycle times needed for completing tests.
Applications
- Occupational Safety Compliance: Helps manufacturers, testing bodies, and employers evaluate dust emissions from motor-operated hammers to minimize health risks related to respirable and inhalable dust exposure.
- Product Development: Supports tool manufacturers in designing hammers with effective dust extraction and control technologies meeting standardized measurement procedures.
- Workplace Risk Assessment: Provides reliable metrics for assessing dust hazards in construction, demolition, and related industries where hammers are widely used.
- Standardized Testing Laboratories: Enables consistent, repeatable testing methods for comparing dust emission performance of different hammer models under controlled conditions.
- Regulatory Certification: Assists in demonstrating conformity with European occupational health and safety requirements for electric power tools.
Related Standards
- EN 50632-1:2015: The general framework for dust measurement procedures applicable to all electric motor-operated tools, to be used in conjunction with EN 50632-2-6.
- EN 10080:2005: Specifies requirements for steel used as reinforcement in concrete, referenced for the preparation of reinforced concrete blocks used in hammer testing.
- European Dust Measurement Standards: Other sub-parts of EN 50632 address dust measurement for specific electric tools, such as grinders and saws, complementing the hammer-specific protocol.
- Occupational Safety Regulations: Includes reference to directives and guidelines related to workplace exposure limits for dust and particulate matter.
