Overview
FprEN 62368-3:2017/prAA:2018 is a CENELEC draft amendment addressing safety aspects for DC power transfer through communication cables and ports in audio/video, information and communication technology equipment. Prepared by CLC/TC 108X (April 2018), the draft amendment accompanies IEC 62368-3:2017 and is intended to be merged and published as a unified EN 62368-3 document. The stated objective is to reduce the likelihood of fire and electric‑shock hazards under foreseeable usage conditions.
Key points from the draft include its role in supporting conformity with European Directives (notably the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU) and its normative linkage to EN 62368-1 and other referenced publications.
Key Topics
- Scope and objective: Safety requirements focused on DC power transfer via communication cables and ports to mitigate fire and electric‑shock hazards.
- Draft amendment status: prAA submitted for enquiry (deadline noted in draft: 2018-07-13); if approved it will be combined with FprEN 62368-3:2017.
- Normative references: Cross-references to IEC/EN 62368-1 and related guides for safety publications.
- Regulatory linkage: Informative annexes (ZZ, ZZA, ZZB) explain the relationship to the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), clarifying the presumption of conformity when the standard is cited in the Official Journal.
Applications
This draft amendment and the resulting EN 62368-3 are directly relevant to:
- Manufacturers of AV, IT and communication devices that deliver or receive DC power over communication cables and port interfaces.
- Compliance and certification teams seeking to align product safety with LVD and RED essential requirements.
- Test laboratories and safety engineers developing test plans and risk assessments for DC power transfer in communication infrastructures.
Practical benefits include:
- Clearer guidance on hazards specific to DC over data/comm links
- A harmonised reference for national adoption by CENELEC members
- Support for conformity assessment and documentation when placing products on EU/EFTA markets
Related Standards
- EN/IEC 62368-1: Fundamental safety requirements for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment; referenced as a normative basis.
- IEC 62368-3 (future): The international publication that this draft aligns with and modifies for the European context.
- ISO/IEC Guide 51 and IEC Guide 104: Guidance documents referenced for safety publication preparation and inclusion of safety aspects in standards.
For stakeholders preparing for regulatory compliance, the draft FprEN 62368-3:2017/prAA:2018 provides targeted safety considerations for power-over-communication interfaces and should be referenced alongside EN 62368-1 and applicable directive guidance. Ensure to monitor CENELEC announcements for the final publication and any national implementation dates.
