HD 620 applies to cables with extruded insulation and for rated voltages Uo/U(Um) from 3,6/6 (7,2) kV up to 20,8/36(42) kV used in power distribution systems of voltages not exceeding the maximum r.m.s. value of the system voltage Um.
This Part (Part 1) specifies the general requirements applicable to these cables, unless otherwise specified in the particular sections of this HD.
Test methods specified are given EN 60228, EN 60229, EN 60332-1-2, EN 60811, EN 60885-3, HD 605 and HD 632.
Attention should be drawn to the fact that a significant number of sections include references to long term tests which are collected in HD 605.  These long-term tests are considered as necessary and reflect the best available knowledge for the existing cable design.  They are related to specific designs and different philosophies concerning adequate measures against the influence of water.  However, it is the firm intention to reduce this large number of different tests, but more experience should be gained before starting to rationalise this important matter.
The particular types of cables are specified in Parts 9 to 12.
NOTE   Parts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8  were withdrawn in HD 620 S2.

Electric cables - Extended application of test results for reaction to fire

This EN gives the procedure and rules for extended application of results of tests carried out according to the test methods described in EN 50399, EN 60332 1 2 and EN 61034 2.
The EXAP rules described apply to EN 50399 test results used for classification in classes B2ca, Cca and Dca, additional smoke production classes s1, s2 and s3 and flaming droplets/particles, to EN 60332 1 2 test results used for classification in classes B2ca, Cca, Dca and Eca and to EN 61034 2 test results used for classification in classes s1a and s1b.
No EXAP procedure and rules have been developed in respect of the results of tests carried out
according to the test method described in EN 60754–2. As the parameters (pH and conductivity) for each cable in a family are determined based upon calculation using material test results, this is considered as a matter of direct application. Material test results taken from any one sample of finished cable from a family are sufficient to calculate the parameters for each cable in the family.
Cables of diameter 5,0 mm and less should be tested as bundles according to EN 50399. Bundled cables are not included in the EXAP rules applying to EN 50399 test results.
The rules apply to circular and non-circular cables provided that they fall within the scope of the relevant test method.
A specific EXAP rule has been developed for the most common generic power cable families,  optical fibre cables and copper communication cables (CCC). A general EXAP rule has been developed for any power cable families. The general EXAP rule is not applicable to communication or optical fibre cables.
NOTE 1   Multicore power cables are sometimes referred to as control cables with a rated voltage but for the purposes of this standard are considered as power cables. For multipair, multitriple and multiquad control cables either the general EXAP rule for power cables or the specific EXAP rule for copper communication cables can be applied.
The general EXAP rule may be applied in the case of hybrid cables provided that the conditions of 6.1 are fulfilled.
The use of the specific EXAP rule gives benefit in the lower number of cables to be tested for a range of cable constructions (product family).
An EXAP is only possible when cables belong to a defined family as defined in this standard.

This European Standard gives the general requirements for rigid and flexible energy cables of rated voltages U0/U up to and including 450/750 V a.c., used in power installations and with domestic and industrial appliances and equipment.
NOTE 1   For some types of flexible cables, the term "cord" is used.
NOTE 2   Rated voltages are given by reference to alternating current (a.c.) systems. Use of the cables in direct current (d.c.) systems is permitted.
NOTE 3   National regulations may prescribe additional performance requirements for cables that are not given in the particular requirements. For example for buildings with high levels of public access, additional fire performance requirements may be applicable, The test methods for checking conformity with the requirements are given in other standards (see Introduction). The particular types of cables are specified in EN 50525-2 (series) and EN 50525-3 (series). The individual parts within those two series are collectively referred to hereafter as "the particular specifications". Only the sizes (conductor class, cross-sectional area), number of cores, other constructional features and rated voltages given in the particular specification apply to the individual cable type. The code designations of these types of cables are in accordance with HD 361.

EN 50399 specifies the apparatus and methods of test for the assessment of vertical flame spread, heat release, smoke production and occurrence of flaming droplets/particles of vertically-mounted electric cables under defined conditions.
NOTE   For the purpose of this standard, the term “electric cable” covers all power, control and communication cables, including optical fibre cables and hybrid cables used for the conveyance of energy and/or signals.
EN 50399 details the apparatus for the fire propagation testing and the arrangement and calibration of the instrumentation to be installed in order to measure the heat release and the smoke production during the test. The combustion gases are collected in a hood above the test chamber and conveyed through an exhaust system, which allows the measurement of heat release rate and smoke production. Test procedures to be used for type approval testing for classification of cables in classes [2, 6] B1ca, B2ca, Cca and Dca are given. Cable installation on the test ladder and the volume of air passing through the chamber are in accordance with the Commission Decision 2006/751/EC [5], which is reflected in the requirements of this standard.

This part of EN 50397 provides general recommendations for the selection, storage, transportation and installation of the covered conductors and the related accessories specified in Parts 1 and 2 of the standard, unless otherwise specified. Safety regulations and environmental regulations as well as rules for installation and mechanical design are not considered in this Guide to use, as they are covered by relevant national regulations and laws. Relevant national regulations are not considered in this guide, but shall always be consulted as appropriate.
NOTE   The term "national regulations" is used throughout this guide. It may include specific safety regulations, rules of installation and other relevant instructions which, depending upon the particular country or district, may exist in a legislative (mandatory) form, or as a non-mandatory code of practice. In addition certain specific utilities may have their own safety practices.
It is assumed that the design of installations, the purchase and installation of covered conductors and of the related accessories specified in this EN is entrusted to suitably skilled and competent people. In case of doubt as to the suitability of covered conductors and the related accessories for a particular use, further specific information shall be obtained from the manufacturer.
