Establishes a system of designation for plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-P) which may be used as the basis for specifications. PVC-P plastics are differentiated by a classification system based on appropriate levels of properties such as Shore hardness, density and torsional-stiffness temperature at 300 MPa and on information about physical form, intended application, additives and colorants. Replaces the second edition.

La présente partie de l'ISO 2898 est applicable à toutes les compositions plastifiées d'homopolymères et de copolymères qui contiennent au moins 50 % (m/m) de chlorure de vinyle. Elle est également applicable aux compositions plastifiées qui contiennent du poly(chlorure de vinyle) chloré et à celles qui contiennent des mélanges constitués d'un ou plusieurs polymères parmi ceux susmentionnés, sous réserve que la teneur totale en ces polymères soit égale à au moins 50 % (m/m) du mélange de polymères de la composition. La présente partie de l'ISO 2898 s'applique aux matériaux prêts à l'emploi sous forme de poudre (mélange sec), grains ou granulés, non modifiés ou modifiés par des colorants, additifs, charges, etc. La présente partie de l'ISO 2898 ne s'applique ni aux plastiques cellulaires, ni aux compositions en pâte (plastisols). Le fait que des matériaux aient la même désignation n'implique pas qu'ils présentent nécessairement les mêmes performances. La présente partie de l'ISO 2898 ne comporte pas de données sur la conception, la performance ou les conditions de mise en oeuvre qui peuvent être exigées pour spécifier un matériau pour une application et/ou une méthode de mise en oeuvre. Si de telles propriétés additionnelles sont nécessaires, elles doivent être déterminées conformément aux méthodes d'essai prescrites dans l'ISO 2898-2, le cas échéant. Afin de prescrire un matériau thermoplastique pour une application particulière ou d'assurer une méthode de mise en oeuvre reproductible, des exigences additionnelles peuvent être indiquées dans le bloc de données 5 (voir article 3, premier alinéa).

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide fed-
eration of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 YO of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 2898-1 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/lC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 9, Thermoplastics.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition
(IS0 2898-1 :I 986) and includes the following changes:
the text has been brought into line with latest version of the so-called
"frame text";
"tape manufacture" has been added in data block 2 as a possible
application.
IS0 2898 consists of the following parts, under the general title Plastics -

1 Scope
1.1 This part of IS0 2898 establishes a system of designation for plasticized thermoplastic material which may be
used as the basis for specifications.
1.2 The types of PVC-P plastics are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate
levels of the designatory properties
a) Shore hardness
b) density
torsional-stiffness temperature at 300 MPa
c)
and on information about physical form, intended application and/or method of processing, important properties,
additives and colorants.
1.3 This part of IS0 2898 is applicable to all plasticized compositions of homopolymers and copolymers that con-
tain at least 50 Yo (m/m) of vinyl chloride. It is also applicable to plasticized compositions containing chlorinated
poly(viny1 chloride) and to plasticized compositions containing blends of one or more of the above-mentioned poly-
mers, provided that the total amount of these polymers represents at least 50 % (m/m) of the polymer content of
the composition.
This part of IS0 2898 applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder (dry blends), granules or pel-
lets, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc.
This part of IS0 2898 does not apply IO cellular plastics or to paste compositions (plastisols).
1.4 It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance.
This part of IS0 2898 does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which
may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
If such additional properties are required, they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in
part 2 of this International Standard, if suitable.
1.5 In order to specify a thermoplastic material for a particular application or to ensure reproducible processing,
additional requirements may be given in data block 5 (see clause 3, first paragraph).
