Overview
SIST EN 15154-4:2009 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies minimum performance requirements for non plumbed-in emergency safety eyewash units. These eyewash units are critical safety devices designed for first aid use when eyes are exposed to harmful substances in environments such as laboratories and industrial workplaces. Unlike plumbed-in systems, these units are self-contained with rinsing fluid pre-filled by the manufacturer, enabling immediate eye irrigation without connection to water supply lines.
The standard ensures that eyewash units deliver effective rinsing, are safe to use, and include essential labeling and manufacturer information for proper handling and maintenance. By conforming to SIST EN 15154-4:2009, manufacturers provide users with reliable and standardized personal eye safety equipment to minimize eye injury risks.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
EN 15154-4 applies exclusively to non plumbed-in eyewash units, including transportable, portable, and personal types, designed for emergency flushing of eyes exposed to hazardous substances.Performance Requirements
- Efficacy: Units must effectively reduce the effects of chemical exposure on eyes.
- Rinsing Fluid Quality: Fluids must be non-toxic and safe; water used should be potable or equivalent quality to prevent germ growth. Saline or buffered solutions must be sterile in accordance with EN 556-1 or EN 556-2.
- Flow Characteristics: Fluid flow must cover the entire eye area, including eyelids, at a low pressure to avoid injury, facilitating continuous flushing.
- Container Safety: Design materials must not degrade rinse fluid quality or become hazardous. For transportable units, features like handles or wheels ensure ease of movement.
Functional Requirements
- Activation shall be intuitive and quick (within 5 seconds), operable with one hand, even with closed eyes.
- Single-use units must have tamper-evident seals to guarantee safety and sterility.
- Multiple-use and reconditionable units require designs preventing cross-contamination, clear fit-for-use indicators, and tamper-evident features.
- Reconditioning procedures are to be performed only by manufacturers or authorized agents, including marking recondition and expiry dates.
Labeling and Information
Products must be labelled according to EN 1041 and EN 980, showing manufacturer details, batch codes, sterility status, effective volume, usage instructions, safety warnings, and storage recommendations. Additional user information includes correct placement guidance, use procedures, chemical compatibility, and reconditioning contact details.
Applications
SIST EN 15154-4:2009 applies primarily in chemical laboratories, production facilities, industrial environments, and workplaces where personnel are at risk of eye exposure to hazardous substances. Non plumbed-in eyewash units are essential first aid equipment for:
- Immediate eye irrigation following contact with corrosive chemicals or irritants.
- Portable eye flushing solutions where fixed plumbing is unavailable or impractical.
- Personal safety kits carried on the individual for instant response to accidental chemical splashes.
- Supplementary safety devices during transport or temporary hazardous operations.
These units help reduce eye injury severity, support compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, and enhance workplace emergency preparedness.
Related Standards
- EN 15154-1, EN 15154-2, EN 15154-3: These parts address plumbed-in body showers and plumbed-in eyewash units, as well as non plumbed-in body showers, complementing the EN 15154-4 focus on portable units.
- EN 556-1 & EN 556-2: Sterilization requirements that apply to solutions used in eyewash units.
- EN 1041 & EN 980: Standards guiding labelling and symbols for medical devices, including eyewash units.
