SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003 is the SIST adoption of ETSI EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1, a European standard for cordless audio devices, consumer radio microphones and in-ear monitoring systems. It specifies technical characteristics and test methods for RF performance, spectrum use and radiated emissions for analogue and digital audio equipment in the stated frequency ranges, for manufacturers, test laboratories and approval bodies.

What does SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003 specify?

SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003 sets minimum characteristics and measurement methods for cordless audio, consumer radio microphones, in-ear monitoring, in-vehicle cordless, personal cordless and broadband multichannel audio systems. It is written for conformity testing and common approval practice, and it assumes integral antennas.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 10 and three annexes.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ANormative radiated measurement arrangements, test sites, coupling methods and test fixtures
Annex BNormative measurement of necessary bandwidth (BN)
Annex CInformative receiver parameters, including blocking and receiver frequency mask guidance

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003?

Clause 5 requires the applicant to present representative equipment, declare the intended channel bandwidths and provide the interface information and tools needed for testing. In practice, the lab must be able to reproduce normal operation, including audio, dc power and control settings.

Clauses 5.1.5 to 5.1.9.2 define how equipment is sampled for testing. Single-channel, two-channel and multi-channel equipment are tested at selected frequencies within the alignment or switching range, and equipment with external frequency control is checked across the tunable range. This matters because the standard does not require every channel to be tested, but it does require test points that represent the full operating range.

Clause 5.2 covers design, controls and marking. Controls that could increase interference if mis-set must not be easily accessible, and the equipment marking must identify the applicant or trademark and the type designation. For buyers and auditors, this links the tested product to the production model.

Clauses 6 and 7 define test conditions. Measurements are made under normal conditions and, where stated, under extreme temperature and supply conditions, with a defined test power source. The normal test modulation is a 500 Hz tone for nominal deviation, while necessary bandwidth uses weighted noise. This means the equipment must stay within limits not only in ideal conditions, but also as temperature and supply move away from nominal.

Clause 8 gives the transmitter requirements: frequency error, carrier power, channel bandwidth, spurious emissions and transmitter shutoff. The standard sets frequency-error limits, defines how to measure carrier power and necessary bandwidth, uses spectral masks for the occupied band, and requires the transmitter carrier to fall by at least 30 dB within a short time after audio stops. The carrier-power limits are given by equipment family and band in Table 3, so the applicable limit depends on the product type.

Clause 9 covers receiver spurious emissions. Depending on the receiver design, emissions are measured at an external RF port, from the cabinet structure or from the integral antenna. Clause 10 then requires the measurement uncertainty to be recorded and kept within stated limits, so the test report can support a valid pass/fail decision.

What terms does SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003 define?

  • Integral antenna - an antenna that the manufacturer declares to be an indispensable part of the equipment.
  • Artificial antenna - a tuned reduced-radiating dummy load that matches the nominal impedance specified by the applicant.
  • Channel bandwidth - the frequency width reserved for a channel, including margin for adjacent channels, centered on the carrier frequency.
  • Necessary bandwidth (BN) - the bandwidth just sufficient to carry the information at the required rate and quality under specified conditions.
  • Equipment Under Test (EUT) - the item being measured in the test setup.
  • Spurious emissions - emissions outside the carrier and sidebands associated with the test modulation, measured away from the fundamental transmitting frequency.
  • Effective radiated power (erp) - the radiated power used in the transmitter and receiver emission limits.

Who uses SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003?

Manufacturers use SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003 to design cordless audio products and plan type tests. Test laboratories use it to set up radiated measurements, bandwidth measurements and uncertainty reporting. Quality managers, conformity assessment bodies and regulators use it for approval, audit and market surveillance of wireless audio equipment.

What changed in SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003 from the previous edition?

This edition brings the published EN 301 357 into line with the R&TTE Directive and expands the scope to digital audio.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003?

StandardContribution
CEPT/ERC/REC01-06Mutual recognition of type testing and type approval for radio equipment
CEPT/ERC/DEC(97)10Mutual recognition of conformity assessment procedures and marking
CEPT/ERC/REC70-03Short Range Devices use and power allocation
ETSI EN 301 489-9EMC conditions for wireless microphones and similar RF audio links

ETSI EN 300 220Short-range device radio equipment below 1 GHz
ITU-R BS.559-2Weighted noise used for necessary bandwidth measurement
IEC 60244-13Band-limited noise method for transmitter bandwidth testing
ETSI ETR028Measurement uncertainty method
ETSI ETR273Radiated test site verification guidance
ANSI C63.5Antenna calibration for radiated emission measurements
IEC 60489-3Receiver measurement guidance used in the informative annex
ETSI EN 301 357-2Companion part for harmonized requirements under article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive

What does the SIST EN 301 357-1 V1.2.1:2003 document contain?

The document contains clause-based procedures for sample selection, test conditions, radiated measurement setup, transmitter limits, receiver emissions and uncertainty reporting. Annex A gives the test-site arrangements for anechoic chambers, ground-plane sites, open area sites and stripline use, plus guidance on antenna placement and coupling. Annex B gives the method for measuring necessary bandwidth, and Annex C gives receiver guidance on blocking and frequency masks. It is a practical test document, so its main value is in the measurement methods, set-ups and limit tables used for design verification and approval testing.
