SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 is a SIST standard for measuring overall system performance in digital microwave radio transmission systems. It applies to terrestrial digital radio-relay systems and sets out how to test a complete simulated system during factory acceptance and type approval, after the individual parts have been tested. The document focuses on BER, jitter, acceptable input interruption, and verification of protection switching.

What does SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 specify?

SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 specifies measurement work for the system-level check of a terrestrial digital radio-relay link. The standard emphasizes overall configuration and tells the reader when a parameter should be measured on each hop, on the full multi-hop link, or on each radio channel.

ClauseWhat it covers

3Bit-error ratio (BER), including multi-channel interference and multipath effects
4Jitter
5Acceptable input interruption
6Verification of protection switching operation

The document is aimed at measurements carried out after component or section tests. In practice, it is used to confirm how the whole radio-relay system behaves under operating conditions, especially where several channels or hops interact.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002?

BER and system interaction

Clause 3 ties BER testing to the methods in IEC 835-1-4 and the transmit-receive section arrangement described in IEC 835-2-4. The standard separates BER that depends on receiver input level from the residual BER at nominal input level. That matters because one part varies with fading or level changes, while the other reflects low-level noise, equipment ageing, and cumulative hop effects.

Clause 3.1 says the BER versus receiver input level is measured separately for each hop and each radio channel in a multi-hop link, including higher-than-nominal input levels to cover up-fade conditions. Clause 3.2 treats residual BER as cumulative, so it is measured over the complete multi-hop link in all radio channels.

Clause 3.3 addresses multi-channel interference. It describes adjacent-channel interference and co-channel interference, and measures their effect as carrier-to-noise ratio degradation. The practical outcome is a figure or value that shows how much extra carrier level is needed to recover the specified BER when interference is present.

For this measurement, the detailed equipment specification should state:

  • carrier frequencies and polarizations of the test and interfering channels
  • the BER level used for the degradation measurement
  • the test-channel input level without interference
  • the interfering-channel input levels
  • the highest permitted carrier-to-noise ratio degradation

Clause 3.4 extends BER work to multipath propagation and multi-channel interference by measuring signatures. For factory acceptance and type tests, this shows whether selective fading and interference together push the system beyond acceptable BER.

Jitter

Clause 4 says three types of jitter are measured over a transmit-receive section using the methods in IEC 835-1-4. In a multi-hop system, the cumulative r.m.s. output jitter without input jitter and the overall jitter transfer function are determined for all radio channels. The maximum tolerable input jitter is measured separately for each hop, which helps users check whether timing impairments build up across the link.

Acceptable input interruption

Clause 5 uses the single-section method from IEC 835-1-4 and extends it to the multi-hop link. The interruption is applied on the first hop to create the worst case, so the result reflects the highest overall interruption time. This is useful when the system must tolerate brief breaks without unacceptable service loss.

Protection switching

Clause 6 says that, when protection switching is used, its operation should be verified during overall system performance tests. The working channel BER is raised beyond a specified value to trigger switching, and both automatic change-over and restoration are checked. This confirms that the protection arrangement responds as intended under fault conditions.

What terms does SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 define?

  • Bit-error ratio (BER) - The ratio of received bits in error to the total received bits, used to judge digital transmission quality.
  • r.m.s. - Root mean square, a way to express the effective value of jitter over time.
  • p.r.b.s. - Pseudo-random bit sequence, used to drive interfering channels during measurements.
  • Carrier-to-noise ratio - The level difference between the wanted radio carrier and the noise floor, used to show how interference degrades reception.
  • Signature - The BER-related notch-depth behavior used to characterize multipath fading effects in a radio-relay hop.
  • NFD - Net filter discrimination, the horizontal shift between co-channel and adjacent-channel interference curves.
  • Adjacent-channel interference - Unwanted reception from neighboring channels, usually linked to limited channel selectivity.
  • Co-channel interference - Unwanted reception on the same channel, often caused by antenna back radiation or finite cross-polarization discrimination.

Who uses SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002?

SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 is used by manufacturers, test laboratories, and approval bodies working on digital microwave radio transmission systems. It is especially relevant for factory acceptance tests and type approval tests on terrestrial radio-relay equipment.

Network operators, quality teams, and system integrators use it to check whether a multi-hop link meets expected performance when interference, fading, jitter, or protection switching are involved. It is also useful when a buyer needs a test basis for a complete simulated system rather than for individual components only.

What changed in SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 is stated to be identical to EN 60835-2-10:1993.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002?

  • IEC 835-1-4:1992 - Gives the measurement methods for transmission performance and is also the source for BER, jitter, and acceptable input interruption methods.
  • IEC 835-2-4 - Covers the transmitter/receiver including modulator/demodulator and is used for the section configuration and signature-related measurements.
  • IEC 835-2-6 - Covers protective switching and is the companion reference for verifying change-over and restoration.
  • IEC 835-2-8 - Covers the adaptive equaliser and is referenced for signature measurement details.
  • CCIR Report 930-2 - Provides performance objectives for digital radio-relay systems and supports the discussion of residual BER.

What does the SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 document contain?

The document contains a foreword, an introduction, six clauses, and three figures. The figures show interference sources in a three-channel radio-relay system, the presentation of BER degradation versus carrier-to-noise ratio, and the effect of co-channel and adjacent-channel interference through NFD.

It also describes how to present results for BER degradation and how to state the detailed items needed in an equipment specification. For a test engineer, the useful content is the measurement logic, the conditions for multi-hop and multi-channel testing, and the references to the detailed methods in related IEC sections.

INTRODUCTION
In previous sections of IEC 835-2 measurement methods for parameters of the digital
radio-relay system have been discussed separately for each part of the system.
In addition to these tests, the overall performance of a complete simulated system should
be tested.
The tests cover the two basic parameters of digital transmission systems, bit-error ratio
and jitter, as well as the acceptable input interruption and verification of the protection
switching operation, which are all affected by the presence of more than one radio channel
and/or radio hop. The measurement of other additional parameters such as error-free
seconds, burst-error ratio, block-error ratio, which remain under consideration by other
international organizations, may also be required.

Part 2: Measurements on terrestrial radio-relay systems
Section Ten — Overall system performance
1 Scope
This section IEC 835-2 deals with measurements to be carried out during factory
acceptance tests and type approval tests on a complete simulated digital radio-relay
system, following tests on the individual parts of the system.
In the following, it will be stated for each parameter whether or not a multi-hop measure-
ment is required in the overall system performance test, depending on the cumulative or
non-cumulative property of that parameter. In this section, the emphasis is on the system
configuration. For methods of measurement, see under the appropriate future sections of
IEC 835-1 and IEC 835-2.

The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute
provisions of this section of IEC 835-2. At the time of publication, the editions indicated
were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this
section of IEC 835-2 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most re-
cent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain regis-
ters of currently valid International Standards.
