Paints and varnishes - Evaluation of the surface disfigurement caused by fungi and algae on coatings
This European Standard specifies a procedure for the evaluation of the degree of surface disfigurement caused by fungi and algae on coatings.
This European Standard is not applicable for evaluating disfigurements caused by blue stain in service on and in wood surfaces. A scale for the assessment of blue stain of coated and uncoated wood is specified in EN 152:2011, 8.5.2.

Overview
EN 16492:2014 - Paints and varnishes: Evaluation of the surface disfigurement caused by fungi and algae on coatings - is a CEN European Standard that specifies a visual procedure to assess and report the degree of surface disfigurement on coatings caused by fungal or algal growth. The standard provides a systematic, repeatable rating system for intensity, quantity, and percentage area of biological growth and sets out basic preparation, inspection and reporting requirements. It is not applicable to blue stain in or on wood (see EN 152:2011).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & limitation
- Evaluates visible disfigurement from fungi and algae on coating surfaces.
- Excludes blue stain assessments on wood (EN 152:2011 applies).
- Principle
- Assign numeric ratings for intensity, quantity and percentage area of growth.
- Preparation
- Inspect flat test specimens or defined façade areas without wiping or cleaning.
- For better discrimination between fungi and algae, examine surfaces under wet conditions (gently spray with clean water).
- Apparatus
- Use simple visual assessment; microscope (up to ×100) if necessary to distinguish biological growth from dirt/soiling.
- Procedure
- Visual assessment under good illumination, from <1 m distance.
- Experienced operators recommended for precision; report growth observed only on accumulated dirt separately.
- Expression of results
- Use the numeric rating schemes (see Annex A, based on EN ISO 4628-1) for:
- Intensity (0–5)
- Quantity (0–5)
- Percentage area (0–4)
- Example format: “fungal growth: intensity 1, quantity 3, percentage area 2”.
- Use the numeric rating schemes (see Annex A, based on EN ISO 4628-1) for:
- Test report requirements
- Identify product, reference EN 16492:2014, specimen origin and exposure, statement whether growth is fungal or algal, numeric ratings, presence of dirt/soiling, microscopy use, deviations, anomalies and test dates.
Applications and users
EN 16492:2014 is practical for:
- Paint and coating manufacturers for quality control and product claims
- Laboratory testing and independent certification bodies
- Building envelope and façade inspectors assessing in-service disfigurement
- Specifiers, architects and facility managers evaluating coating performance in service
- R&D teams developing biocide or anti-fouling coatings
Using the standard helps provide consistent, comparable reports on biological surface disfigurement - supporting warranty decisions, compliance checks and formulation improvements.
