SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 is the Slovenian standard published by SIST and identical to EN ISO 11501:2004. It specifies a test method for measuring dimensional change in plastics film and sheeting when heated, in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. It is used by people who need to check how film or sheet behaves under heating, including plastics sheets whether or not they are thermoshrinking.
What does SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 specify?
SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 specifies a method for determining dimensional change on heating in plastics films and sheeting. The method also applies to plastic sheets up to 1 mm thick, whether they are intended to shrink with heat or not.
The document is organized into Clause 1 to Clause 9, plus Annex A and Annex ZA.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Informative examples of heating times and temperatures for different materials |
| Annex ZA | Normative references to international publications and their European equivalents |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 11501:2004?
SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 measures change separately in the longitudinal and transverse directions, so the result shows how the material behaves along and across the sheet. That matters in practice because shrinkage or elongation is often directional, and a single value would hide that difference.
Clause 2 and Annex ZA - conditioning reference: The test uses ISO 291 for conditioning and testing atmospheres. Samples are conditioned for at least 2 h before cutting and measuring, and after heating they are conditioned again for at least 30 min in the same atmosphere. This helps make results comparable between laboratories.
Clauses 4 and 6 - heating setup: The method uses a circulating-air oven and a metal container with a kaolin bed about 20 mm deep. The oven must keep the test assemblies within the specified temperature limits, circulate air at a rate that gives at least six air changes per hour, and keep assemblies separated from each other and from the oven walls. In practice, this keeps heating uniform.
Clause 5 - test specimens: Prepare three specimens, about 120 mm x 120 mm, taken from the centre and two sides of the film or sheet, at least 50 mm from the edge. Mark the longitudinal and transverse directions on each specimen. This gives a small set of samples that represents different areas of the material.
Clause 5 and Clause 6 - measurement before and after heating: Mark two gauge lengths on each specimen, one in each direction, and measure them to the nearest 0.5 mm before heating and again after heating. The specimen is dusted with kaolin, placed flat on the kaolin bed, heated for the specified time, and then reconditioned before remeasurement. This is the core of the test.
Clause 7 - calculation of change: The change in each gauge length is calculated as a percentage of the original length. The standard treats negative values as shrinkage and positive values as elongation, then reports the mean value for the three specimens rounded to one decimal place. That gives a result that can be compared against a product specification.
Annex A and Clause 6 - heating conditions: Annex A gives example heating times and temperatures for different materials, including non-shrink film and sheeting and materials intended to be thermoshrunk or thermoformed. These examples help users choose a starting point for the test when setting up a method for a specific material.
Clause 8 and Clause 9 - reporting and precision: The document states that precision is not known because inter-laboratory data are not available. The test report must identify the standard, the material, the test temperature, the heating time, the mean percentage change, the direction of the change, and the test date. This supports traceability.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 define?
- Longitudinal (machine) direction - the direction along the film or sheet, usually the processing direction.
- Transverse direction - the direction across the width of the film or sheet, perpendicular to the longitudinal direction.
- Gauge length - the marked measuring span used to compare length before and after heating.
- Kaolin bed - the layer of kaolin used to support the specimen flat during heating.
- Thermoshrinking - a material intended to shrink when heated.
- Thermoformed - a material intended to be shaped by heating.
- Shrinkage - a negative dimensional change after heating.
- Elongation - a positive dimensional change after heating.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 11501:2004?
SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 is used by testing laboratories, plastics film and sheet manufacturers, quality control teams, and buyers or specifiers who need a defined method for checking thermal dimensional stability. It is also useful in incoming inspection and product comparison, where the question is whether a film or sheet changes size in a controlled way when heated.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 carries ISO 11501:1995 into the European system as EN ISO 11501:2004, and the endorsement notice states that the text was approved without modifications.
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 11501:2004?
The only normative reference named is ISO 291, Plastics - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing. It provides the conditioning atmosphere used before specimen preparation and after heating, so the dimensional-change results are based on specimens in a controlled condition. Annex ZA maps this reference to EN ISO 291:1997.
What does the SIST EN ISO 11501:2004 document contain?
The document contains a test principle, apparatus requirements, specimen preparation, the heating and remeasurement procedure, the calculation of percentage change, a precision note, and a test report checklist. It also includes Figure 1 showing specimen dimensions and gauge lengths.
Annex A provides example heating times and recommended temperatures for several material types, which helps users choose test conditions for routine work or method setup. Annex ZA lists the normative reference and its European equivalent, which is useful for users working under the European standard system.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 11501 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 11, Products.
