Overview

EN 9300-013:2013 (CEN) is the LOTAR (LOng Term Archiving and Retrieval) reference process description for “Archival Storage” of digital technical product documentation (3D, CAD, PDM). It defines a recommended, secure process for handling an Archival Information Package (AIP) inside an archive as introduced in EN 9300-010. Primary focuses are setting digital time signatures, ensuring storage integrity, updating archive descriptive metadata and meta‑databases, and enabling disaster recovery.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to new 3‑D product data records and can be applied to existing records produced under earlier procedures.
    • Domain focus: aerospace product data (CAD, 3D, PDM).
  • Core archival process steps
    • Transfer of the AIP from working to main storage.
    • Initiation and setting of digital time signatures (authentication and timestamping) to assure integrity and provenance.
    • Physical store to media step, with storage decisions guided by long‑term availability requirements.
    • Storage assurance using checks (e.g., checksums/CRC or system logs) to validate successful transfer.
    • Update of Descriptive Information (DI) and the archive meta database with storage and signature data.
    • Generation and distribution of confirmation reports to administrators and producers.
    • Disaster recovery: duplication of AIPs to physically separate facilities.
  • Support and governance
    • Roles: Administrator, Producer, Archive.
    • Error handling, manual DI edits, preservation planning, quality assurance and administrative functions.
    • The archival sub‑process shall be certified; general OAIS recommendations (ISO 14721) are referenced but out of scope.

Practical applications and users

Who benefits:

  • Aerospace OEMs and suppliers managing long‑term CAD/3D/PDM retention
  • Archive administrators, IT architects and data managers implementing LOTAR processes
  • Compliance officers and legal teams requiring verifiable evidence of provenance and integrity
  • PDM/CAD system integrators and preservation planners

Typical uses:

  • Establishing compliant archival workflows for lifecycle data retention
  • Integrating digital time‑stamping and signature mechanisms to meet legal/traceability requirements
  • Designing metadata and meta‑database updates for retrievability and auditability
  • Implementing disaster recovery strategies for critical engineering data

Related standards

  • EN 9300-010 (Overview Data Flow)
  • EN 9300-003 (Fundamentals and concepts)
  • EN 9300-007 (Terms and References)
  • ISO 14721:2003 (OAIS reference model) - general archival recommendations referenced

Figure 1 — Archival Storage The process includes the setting of digital time signatures, generation of additional Descriptive Information (DI) for AIP´s (meta data for the archive), the physical storage of the data within the archive and error checking as well as the steps needed disaster recovery of the stored data. Each company should meet the general recommendations for an archive system and its security, as for example described in ISO 14721:2003 (OAIS). These general recommendations are out of scope. The sub process shall be certified. Process Steps Store to Media, Storage assurance, Update meta-database and Disaster Recovery cover administrative aspects of the archive and its software. The steps are out of scope for the process description and this standard. They are shown for completeness.
