- mise à jour importante de 4.1, 6.5, 6.7 et de la Figure 1;

Overview

EN 61300-2-37:2016 (IEC 61300-2-37:2016) defines a standardized test method - cable bending for fibre optic closures - to assess the effectiveness of the sealing and clamping hardware of a fibre optic closure when an entering or exiting cable is subjected to bending. This third edition (2016) replaces the 2006 edition and introduces updated test details and severity levels tied to bend count/direction, test temperature and overpressure per environmental categories in IEC 61753-1.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and objective: Verify that closures maintain mechanical integrity and environmental sealing (e.g., against water/dust ingress) when cables are bent.
  • Device under test (DUT):
    • An assembled closure with cable(s) representing minimum and maximum cable dimensions.
    • Sealing-performance DUTs must provide an air-pressure test access valve; cable ends are sealed and extend at least 1 m.
    • Separate optical-evaluation DUTs may be constructed to represent all permitted optical functions.
  • Bending procedure:
    • A defined bending cycle: a bend in one direction, an equal bend in the opposite direction, and return to original position.
    • Force is applied smoothly and in a controlled manner at a specified distance from the closure outlet.
    • Tests are performed in a conditioning (climatic) chamber when required.
  • Measurements and examinations:
    • Post-test inspections for damage to the cable, closure, and cable-to-closure seal, plus internal hardware failure.
    • Optical performance evaluations can be included to detect transient or permanent loss.
  • Severity classification:
    • New in this edition: severities determined by number and direction of bends, test temperature and overpressure tied to environmental categories per IEC 61753-1.
  • Apparatus examples: climatic chamber, holding fixture, bending device and test access for pressurization (see Figure 1 in the standard).

Practical applications - who uses this standard

  • Fibre optic closure manufacturers for product validation and design verification of sealing and clamping hardware.
  • Independent test laboratories conducting standardized environmental/mechanical tests.
  • Network operators and system integrators evaluating closure robustness for field deployments (aerial, buried, or ducted environments).
  • Procurement and compliance teams setting acceptance criteria for closures used in networks requiring certified environmental performance.

Related standards

  • IEC/EN 61300-1 - General test and guidance
  • IEC/EN 61300-2-38 - Sealing for pressurized fibre optic closures
  • IEC/EN 61300-3-1 - Visual examination
  • IEC/EN 61300-3-28 - Transient loss measurements
  • IEC 61753-1 - Environmental categories referenced for test severities

By applying EN 61300-2-37:2016, stakeholders ensure closure sealing and clamping hardware sustain mechanical bending stresses and specified environmental conditions, supporting reliable fibre network performance.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
