Overview
ISO 758:1976 specifies a reference method for determining the density of liquid chemical products for industrial use at 20 °C. The procedure uses a glass pyknometer (Gay-Lussac type) to measure the mass of a known volume of sample and of distilled water at 20 °C, and calculates density from the measured masses with the appropriate buoyancy correction. This International Standard replaces ISO Recommendation R 758‑1968.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle: Determine the mass of a fixed internal volume (pyknometer) when filled with the sample and, separately, with water at 20 °C to establish the flask capacity. Calculate density by dividing the sample mass by the pyknometer capacity, applying buoyancy correction.
- Apparatus:
- Pyknometer flask, type 3 (Gay‑Lussac) (ISO 3507); commonly 25 ml or 50 ml.
- Water bath capable of maintaining 20 ± 0.1 °C.
- Standard laboratory balance with readability to 0.001 g.
- Procedure essentials:
- Clean, dry and weigh the empty pyknometer (with stopper).
- Fill with freshly boiled, cooled distilled water, bring to 20 ±0.1 °C and determine apparent mass.
- Empty, dry, fill with the sample and determine apparent mass at 20 °C.
- Take precautions with volatile liquids to avoid evaporation losses.
- Calculations and reporting:
- Use the measured masses and the known density of water at 20 °C (given in the standard as 0.9982 g/ml) and apply a buoyancy correction for air.
- Report results to three decimal places (g/ml).
- Test report must identify the method used, results and expression method, and note any unusual observations or departures from the standard procedure.
Applications and users
ISO 758:1976 is a practical, repeatable reference method used for:
- Quality control and specification checks of industrial liquid chemicals.
- Routine laboratory density determinations for product blending, formulation and acceptance testing.
- Comparative measurements where a standardized reference method is required for contractual or regulatory purposes. Typical users include chemical manufacturers, QC laboratories, testing and calibration laboratories, and standards organizations.
