Overview
SIST EN ISO 13337:2012 establishes the standardized requirements for slotted spring-type straight pins - light duty. These mechanical fasteners are made from steel, austenitic, or martensitic stainless steel and are designed with a nominal diameter ranging from 2 mm to 50 mm. Developed by CEN and ISO Technical Committees focusing on fasteners, this international standard ensures consistent quality, interchangeability, and reliability for light duty applications. The document provides comprehensive guidelines on material selection, dimensions, performance characteristics, and acceptance criteria for these pins.
Key Topics
- Scope: Specifies slotted, spring-type straight pins for light-duty use, with coverage of nominal diameters from 2 mm to 50 mm.
- Material Specification: Covers requirements for plain carbon steel, silicon manganese steel, and both austenitic and martensitic stainless steels.
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Details pin diameters, lengths, slot dimensions, and tolerance classes for hole size (H12).
- Performance Criteria:
- Hardness requirements.
- Shear strength testing (in accordance with ISO 8749).
- Surface finish and treatment, including guidance to avoid hydrogen embrittlement.
- Manufacturing Quality: Pins must be free of burrs, irregularities, and surface defects, delivered in a natural finish unless otherwise agreed.
- Designation System: Standardized approach for identifying slotted spring-type pins, e.g.,
Spring pin ISO 13337-6×30-St.
Applications
Slotted, light-duty spring-type straight pins described in SIST EN ISO 13337:2012 are widely used in industries where precise positioning, alignment, and joining of components are required, but shear loads are moderate. Typical sectors and applications include:
- Automotive manufacturing - Alignment and securing of panels, covers, and lightweight assemblies.
- Machinery and equipment - Locating and retaining components subjected to vibration or light shear forces.
- Furniture production - Concealed joinery and assembly fixtures.
- Consumer electronics and appliances - Internal positioning of parts with minimal tool accessibility.
- Maintenance and repair - Replacement parts for standardized assemblies.
The use of standardized pins ensures compatibility, ease of replacement, and reliability in assembly operations across global supply chains. Fitment guidance provided ensures correct hole sizing and installation to guarantee functionality.
Related Standards
Several international standards complement SIST EN ISO 13337:2012 for comprehensive fastener selection and application:
- ISO 8752 - Spring-type straight pins - Slotted, heavy duty (for higher load capacities).
- ISO 3269 - Fasteners – Acceptance inspection (ensures conformance with quality requirements).
- ISO 4042 - Fasteners – Electroplated coatings (surface treatment and protection guidelines).
- ISO 6507-1 - Metallic materials – Vickers hardness test – Part 1: Test method (hardness verification).
- ISO 8749 - Pins and grooved pins – Shear test (test method for mechanical strength).
Referencing these related standards ensures all aspects of slotted spring pin selection, performance, and quality assurance are addressed for optimal usage and compliance with international norms.
Optimize your fastener selection and manufacturing processes by adhering to SIST EN ISO 13337:2012 for slotted, light-duty spring-type straight pins, ensuring interchangeability, safety, and global standardization.

ISO 13337:2009(E) © ISO 2009 – All rights reserved iiiForeword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
