SIST EN ISO 8743:2026
(Main)Fasteners - Grooved pins - Half-length centre grooved (ISO 8743:2026)
- Abstract
This document specifies the characteristics of grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves (with closed ends), in steel and stainless steel, and with nominal diameter 1 mm to 25 mm.
These grooved pins are designed to fulfil the main following functions:
relative rotation of the assembled parts, and
positioning or guiding,
with an easy installation (due to its symmetrical shape) and a high level of pull-out resistance (due to the elastic fit behaviour of the pin).
The general requirements (including functional principles for grooved pins and assembly) are specified in ISO 13669.

SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 is the CEN adoption of ISO 8743:2026 for grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves (with closed ends). It specifies the characteristics of these pins in steel and stainless steel, with nominal diameters from 1 mm to 25 mm, for use in assemblies that need relative rotation, positioning or guiding. The document points the general principles for grooved pins and assembly to ISO 13669.
What does SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 specify?
SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 covers the geometry, materials, finish, labelling and designation of this grooved pin type. It is organized into Clauses 1 to 8, followed by a bibliography.
The main clauses cover:
- Scope
- Normative references
- Terms and definitions
- Principles of grooved pins and assembly
- Dimensions
- Requirements and reference International Standards
- Labelling on package
- Designation
This structure matters because the document combines product dimensions with the rules needed to specify, order, inspect and mark the pins correctly.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 8743:2026?
SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 ties the product definition to ISO 13669 and then gives the size and specification rules for this pin type. In practice, users need to check dimensions, material condition, surface condition and package information against the clauses and tables.
Dimensions and groove geometry
Clause 5 requires dimensions to follow Figure 1 and Tables 1 and 2. The pin diameter applies only where the grooves are not present, and the document gives tolerances for groove length, groove position and the 120° angle between the two grooves.
For users, this is the core sizing information for design and inspection. It tells manufacturers what to produce and buyers what to verify when matching the pin to a hole and assembly.
Ends, lengths and preferred sizes
SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 allows rounded ends by default and chamfered ends only when requested at the time of order. Tables 1 and 2 also identify preferred and non-preferred sizes, and the length ranges shown between the stepped bold lines define the standard lengths.
For practice, this affects ordering and stock control. If a design needs a non-preferred size or chamfered end, that has to be stated explicitly.
Materials, surface condition and acceptance
Clause 6 links the product to reference standards for steel, stainless steel, coatings and acceptance. Steel uses the symbol St, stainless steel uses grades such as A1, A2, A4, C1 and F1, and other materials may be agreed between purchaser and manufacturer.
The document also points to surface conditions such as as processed, clean and bright, passivated, electroplated coatings, phosphate coatings and zinc flake coatings. Workmanship requires pins to be free of burrs and detrimental defects, and acceptance inspection follows ISO 3269.
Labelling and designation
Clause 7 sets the minimum package labelling items, including ISO 8743, nominal diameter and length, RN or CH, material identification, surface condition, maker or distributor identification, lot number and quantity. Clause 8 gives the designation format and examples.
This matters for traceability and purchasing. A correct designation tells the supplier exactly which diameter, length, end form, material and finish to deliver.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 define?
- Grooved pin - A pin with grooves designed for use where parts must be held while allowing relative motion or positioning.
- RN - The code for a pin with rounded ends.
- CH - The code for a pin with chamfered ends.
- St - The symbol used for steel pins.
- d - The nominal diameter, used throughout the tables and designation.
- l - The nominal length, used together with d in the designation.
- A1, A2, A4, C1, F1 - Stainless steel grades named in the document for this product family.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 8743:2026?
SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 is used by fastener manufacturers, suppliers, purchasers, design engineers and quality or inspection teams. They use it to specify the pin size and end form, select a material and surface condition, label packages, and check acceptance against the listed standards.
It is relevant wherever grooved pins are used for assembly positioning, guiding or controlled rotation in mechanical products and equipment.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 supersedes EN ISO 8743:1997 and is identified as a technically revised third edition. The changes named in the document are:
- general requirements, including principles, hole dimensions, expanded diameter control, straightness, properties and inspection, were moved to ISO 13669
- non-preferred diameters 1 mm, 3.5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm were added
- expanded diameter values for steel were adjusted for the shortest length range and added for stainless steel
- tolerances for rounded ends and values for chamfered ends were added
- groove length and groove location tolerances were added
- stainless steel grades A2, A4, C1 and F1 were added
- specifications for labelling were added as Clause 7
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 8743:2026?
SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 refers to ISO 13669 for the general requirements and functional principles for grooved pins and assembly. It also refers to ISO 1891-4 for manufacturing lot numbering and quality-related vocabulary, ISO 3269 for acceptance inspection, ISO 3506-6 for stainless steel selection, ISO 4042 for electroplated coatings, ISO 9717 for phosphate coatings, and ISO 10683 for zinc flake coatings.
The bibliography also points to related grooved pin standards such as ISO 8739, ISO 8740, ISO 8741, ISO 8742, ISO 8744, ISO 8745, ISO 8746, ISO 8747, ISO 13670 and ISO 13672, which place this document within the wider grooved-pin family.
What does the SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 document contain?
SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 contains Figure 1, which shows the pin form and groove arrangement, and Tables 1 and 2, which give the dimensional data for the two diameter ranges. Those tables are the main engineering reference for design and inspection.
It also contains Table 3, which links material types, surface conditions and reference standards. That table is the practical bridge between the pin specification and coating, material selection and acceptance rules.
The designation clause includes worked examples showing how to build a product designation from diameter, length, end form, material and condition. That helps users write purchase descriptions and verify deliveries without ambiguity.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8743:1997) which has been technically
revised.
