Overview
SIST EN 301 502 V8.0.1:2005 is a harmonized European standard that specifies the minimum essential requirements for Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Base Station and Repeater equipment under Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive (1999/5/EC). Developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and adopted as a Slovenski standard by SIST, this document ensures that GSM infrastructure equipment effectively uses the radio spectrum, minimizing harmful interference and supporting smooth interoperability across networks.
The standard addresses the radio access requirements for both base stations and repeaters, covering multiple GSM frequency bands and aligning with the latest regulatory expectations at the time of its publication.
Keywords: GSM, base station, repeater, radio equipment, R&TTE Directive, spectrum efficiency, telecommunications standard, ETSI.
Key Topics
Scope of Equipment:
- GSM Base Station Systems
- GSM Repeater equipment for digital cellular telecommunications
Frequency Bands Covered:
- P-GSM900, E-GSM900, R-GSM900
- DCS1800
- GSM 450, GSM 480
Essential Requirements:
- Compliance with Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive (ensuring effective spectrum use, avoiding interference).
- Detailed conformance criteria, including:
- Modulation accuracy
- Transmitted RF carrier power and power versus time
- Adjacent channel and spurious emissions
- Intermodulation attenuation
- Sensitivity and blocking characteristics
- Environmental profile compliance as declared by the supplier
Modular Approach:
- The standard is part of a modular set, facilitating flexible adoption as new frequency bands and equipment types are developed.
Applications
Ensuring compliance with SIST EN 301 502 V8.0.1 is crucial for several practical scenarios in the telecommunications industry:
Regulatory Conformity: Manufacturers of GSM base stations and repeater equipment must meet the essential requirements to legally market and operate their products within the European Economic Area (EEA) and in countries adopting the R&TTE/RED directives.
Network Operators: Choose certified equipment to guarantee network reliability, minimize the risk of radio interference, and maintain interoperability within GSM networks.
Product Development: Design and testing of GSM infrastructure must align with the technical specifications and test methods described in the standard to ensure successful type approval and smooth deployment.
International Trade: Adoption of harmonized standards like SIST EN 301 502 enables easier cross-border marketing and deployment of GSM equipment, as mutual recognition of conformity is supported under European law.
Related Standards
To achieve full regulatory compliance and quality assurance, the following related standards and directives should also be considered alongside SIST EN 301 502 V8.0.1:
- Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE Directive): Overarching regulatory framework for radio and telecommunications terminal equipment.
- Council Directive 89/336/EEC (EMC Directive): Addresses electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
- Council Directive 73/23/EEC (LV Directive): Lays down safety standards for electrical equipment.
- ETSI TS 101 087 (GSM 11.21): GSM Base Station System equipment specification - Radio aspects.
- EN 300 609-4 (GSM 11.26): Specification for GSM repeaters.
For the latest updates and ongoing work regarding GSM standards and their harmonized versions, refer to the ETSI website (www.etsi.org).
By adhering to SIST EN 301 502 V8.0.1:2005, manufacturers, network operators, and regulatory bodies can ensure robust, interference-free, and harmonized deployment of GSM infrastructure-pivotal for secure, reliable mobile communications across Europe and internationally.
