The test is intended to indicate the performance of such devices when exposed to torsion and bending as a combined load. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 1995, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:  - addition of new normative references;  - addition of new terms and definitions;  - addition of two figures for test apparatus: one with horizontal rotation DUT, one with rotating deflection unit;  - severity reconsidered. Keywords: nutation, fibre optic device

Optični spojni elementi in pasivne komponente - Osnovni preskusni in merilni postopki - 2-35. del: Preskušanje - Nutacija kabla (IEC 61300-2-35:2014)

Overview

EN 61300-2-35:2014 (IEC 61300-2-35:2014) specifies basic test procedures to determine whether a fibre optic interconnecting device can withstand cable nutation - combined torsion and bending that can occur during operation, service, storage or transport. The test simulates flexing-rotation movement with an applied tensile force to indicate performance under realistic combined loads. This second edition updates normative references, adds terms and apparatus figures (horizontal rotation and rotating deflection unit) and reconsiders test severity.

Key topics

  • Purpose and scope
    • Verification of device suitability when exposed to nutation (combined torsion + bending) during lifecycle events.
  • Test principle
    • A flexing rotation of the cable adjacent to the device under test (DUT) is performed in a conical path while a tensile force is applied, with the DUT or a deflection unit providing rotation.
  • Apparatus design
    • Examples include a rotating clamping device (vertical or horizontal rotation of the DUT) and a rotating deflection unit; swivel pulleys and weights are used to apply tensile force without transmitting torque to the DUT.
  • Test sequence
    • Defined stages: preconditioning, initial examinations and measurements, conditioning (nutation exposure), recovery and final examinations/measurements.
  • Measurements and examinations
    • Visual inspection and active monitoring of optical performance (attenuation, return loss) are referenced through related IEC 61300 parts.
  • Severity and specification
    • The standard provides guidance on severity levels and details to be specified in test plans (see Table of severities in the standard). New edition revises severity considerations and normative references.

Applications

EN 61300-2-35 is used by:

  • Manufacturers of fibre optic connectors, pigtails and passive components to qualify product designs for robustness against nutation.
  • Test laboratories and quality assurance teams to define repeatable environmental test programs.
  • Procurement and compliance teams verifying supplier claims for durability during shipping/installation.
  • R&D and field engineers assessing connector performance in telecom, datacom and other fibre-optic installations where cables experience combined bending and twisting.

Practical benefits include identifying design weaknesses (strain reliefs, clamping, cable routing), improving connector durability, and reducing field failures due to mechanical stress.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent
