Overview

EN 4015:2004 - "Aerospace series - Inserts, thickwall, self-locking - Installation and removal procedure" (CEN) defines the installation, inspection, removal and repair procedures for self-locking thickwall inserts used in aerospace applications. The standard sets out requirements for hole preparation (including serration profile), broaching methods, tooling, crimping (swaging), inspection checks and verified removal/repair processes to ensure reliable threaded joints in aircraft structures.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Procedures for installation and removal of EN-defined thickwall self-locking inserts in aerospace components.
  • Hole preparation and serration: Detailed serration profiles and counterbore dimensions for each insert/tapped-hole combination - critical for correct torque and retention.
  • Broaching methods: Guidance for hand broaching (materials with R < 900 MPa) and machine broaching (R ≥ 900 MPa) with dimensional broach requirements.
  • Installation tooling: Specifications and use procedures for drive tools including air crimping and hand crimping tools. The standard describes correct seating and crimping positioning (insert typically 0.3–0.5 mm below the component surface).
  • Inspection before installation: Cleanliness, deburring and corrosion protection (light smear for aluminium/magnesium components) are required prior to assembly.
  • Checks and gauges: Use of inspection gauges to verify insert position and crimp integrity; visual checks for cracks in the crimped zone.
  • Minimum self‑locking torque: Test method using a standard (unlubricated) bolt - the standard provides required test bolt pitch diameters and minimum self-locking torque values to verify retention.
  • Removal and repair: Destructive removal methods (piloted spot-face cutter or aligned drilling) for crimped inserts, followed by re‑inspection and either same-size replacement or installation of a first-repair-size insert when needed.

Practical applications

  • Installing and swaging self-locking thickwall inserts in aircraft panels, fittings and structural components
  • Quality control and acceptance testing of installed inserts (torque and visual inspection)
  • Field and depot repair of stripped or damaged threads using first-repair inserts
  • Tooling selection and procurement for aerospace fastener installation teams

Who should use this standard

  • Aerospace OEMs and suppliers specifying insert installation procedures
  • Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations
  • Fastener/tooling manufacturers and calibration labs
  • Quality assurance, inspection and NDT personnel responsible for structural fasteners
