Overview
EN 13630-2:2025 - "Explosives for civil uses - Detonating cords and safety fuses - Part 2: Verification of thermal stability" (CEN) specifies a laboratory test method to verify thermal stability of detonating cords and safety fuses. The standard defines the test conditions, sample preparation, apparatus and pass/fail criteria to confirm that products do not detonate, deflagrate or chemically decompose when exposed to elevated temperature.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Verification of thermal stability for detonating cords and safety fuses under controlled conditions.
- Test principle: Expose sealed test pieces to (75 ± 2) °C for 48 hours and observe for detonation, ignition, burning or chemical decomposition.
- Pass criteria: Test is a “pass” if none of the three test pieces detonates/deflagrates, shows ignition/burning, or exhibits chemical decomposition indicated by damage to outer material or weight loss > 1%. Otherwise the result is “fail.”
- Sample sizes and lengths:
- Detonating cords ≤ 50 g/m core loading: (1 000 ± 5) mm per test piece.
- Detonating cords > 50 g/m: length containing at least 50 g explosive per test piece.
- Safety fuse: (1 000 ± 5) mm per test piece. Three test pieces per product type.
- Apparatus: Conditioning chamber controllable at 75 ± 2 °C (dual thermostats or equivalent safety measures, ventilation, remote operation preferred), balance readable to 0.1 g, and non-reactive sealing means for ends (e.g., adhesive tape or rubber cups).
- Procedure essentials: Record initial weight, seal ends, avoid contact inside chamber, maintain temperature for 48 h, inspect and reweigh after test; monitor periodically and terminate early if adverse events occur.
- Test report: Must reference EN 13630-2:2025, identify the explosive tested and record pass/fail with detailed observations for failures.
Practical applications and users
Who benefits from EN 13630-2:2025:
- Manufacturers of detonating cords and safety fuses - for product development, quality control and type testing.
- Accredited testing laboratories - to perform standardized thermal stability verification.
- Regulators and conformity assessment bodies - to assess compliance with safety requirements.
- Procurement and safety managers in construction, mining, demolition and other civil uses - to specify and verify safe explosive components for use, storage and transport.
Practical value:
- Provides a repeatable, documented method to confirm product safety under elevated temperature exposure.
- Supports risk reduction during storage, transport and field operations.
- When cited in the Official Journal, conformance can provide a presumption of conformity with Directive 2014/28/EU (see Annex ZA).
