Overview - EN 60838-2-1:1996 (Lampholders S14)

EN 60838-2-1:1996 (aligned with IEC 838-2-1:1994) specifies particular requirements for S14 lampholders. It applies to both building-in and independent lampholders intended for use with linear incandescent lamps for general lighting service (GLS). Independent lampholders are also tested as complete luminaires. The standard complements the general requirements of IEC/EN 60838-1 and references related tests from IEC 598-1 and other IEC documents.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification: Covers S14 lampholders, including switched and non-switched types and independent vs. built-in designs.
  • Standard ratings: 250 V nominal voltage and 1 A nominal current.
  • Electrical safety & protection: Requirements for protection against electric shock during lamp insertion/removal and with appropriate lamp fitted.
  • Terminals and conductors: Non-rewireable lampholders must accept conductors with nominal cross-sections 0.5 mm² to 1.5 mm²; screw-type terminal dimensional requirements reference E14 terminal dimensions.
  • Switched lampholders:
    • Switches allowed only in ordinary (non-protected) lampholders.
    • Minimum contact clearance of 1.7 mm between open contacts at different potentials.
    • Switch endurance tests: low-cycle and long-cycle operations (200 and 20,000 operations respectively) under specified electrical loads and temperatures (unmarked switches: tested at 60 °C; temperature-marked switches: tested at temperature marking minus 20 °C).
  • Creepage and clearance: Minimum clearance between live parts and accessible metal cap parts 1.7 mm; accessible metal retention springs require 3.6 mm clearance to mounting surface.
  • Mechanical and environmental tests: Requirements include endurance, moisture resistance, insulation resistance/electric strength, resistance to heat and fire, mechanical strength, and resistance to season cracking and rusting.
  • Marking and construction: Labelling, classification and construction requirements follow IEC 60838-1 with S14-specific additions (e.g., cord anchorage and cable-entry protection).

Applications and practical use

  • Ensures safe, interoperable S14 lampholders for lighting manufacturers, luminaire designers and electrical installers.
  • Used when designing or certifying: stand-alone lampholders, lamp fittings integrated into luminaires, and switched lampholder products.
  • Useful for test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing electrical, mechanical and endurance testing to meet EU/CLC requirements.

Who should use this standard

  • Manufacturers of lampholders and luminaires
  • Product compliance and R&D engineers
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Procurement and quality managers specifying S14 components
  • Regulatory/safety authorities assessing conformity

Related standards

  • IEC/EN 60838-1 (general requirements for miscellaneous lampholders)
  • IEC 598-1 (referred mechanical and thermal tests)

promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
